Description
—ENGLISH—
Mboi-Tatá, or simply Boitatá, is a legendary and powerful lamia with the form of a fire spirit, known for protecting the Amazonian forests in Brazil from its aggressors. She has the body of a fiery and shiny snake, with a scale patterns similar to those of eyes, leaving a sparkling trail wherever she passes. Boitatá inhabits primarily caves and rivers in Amazonia, and because of the magical nature of her fire, it does not burn trees, plants, or heat the water of rivers. Her personality can be described as not very much friendly and suspicious, and travelers are often afraid to meet her.
It is advisable that if you find Boitatá, you should remain motionless and with your eyes open to indicate that you do not represent an evil to the forests; if one runs away from her or looks suspicious, Boitatá will coil around her victim with her tail and use her third eye to discover the traveler’s intentions in the region, as a form of test. Having pure intentions and without malice, the traveler will be free to continue his /her journey. However, if the person is spotted in the act of doing some harm to the land, Boitatá will violently pluck the victim's eyes with her sharp claws or simply burn them completely.
The legend says that a long time ago, Boitatá was actually known as Boiguaçu and was a large monstrous snake that lived in a dark cave and that in a period of endless night, she survived a huge flood that flooded the entire region. As the only survivor, the hungry snake wandered, devouring the eyes of all the dead beings she encountered. Those eyes shone, reflecting the last glow of the sun they had seen. Boiguaçu was then filled with the light from all the eyes she devoured, and her body shone brightly until she became the great fiery lamia covered with scales in the form of eyes, Boitatá, returning the sun's luminosity to these lands and becoming the protector of them.
