Description
I work here, and I can't remember what all the user symbols mean. This script adds a title attribute to user links, which tells you what their symbol means.Alas, since dA doesn't preserve the '.user.js' part of the filename which triggers greasemonkey, then if you're not feeling technical, you can install by clicking here: [link]
(On 2008.11.18 I updated this to remove some junk characters that had crept in. Bad TextMate, bad.)

Puts a tooltip on user-links which explains their symbol.

THAT I understand. You have to remember EVERYTHING.

Gallery Director (unpaid lackey)
Might want to change that 'Director' to 'Moderator' now, though!
Nice script.

An accented "A" has been inserted in front of some of the symbols in your code. You may want to fix this, because until you do the affected symbols will never match.

Thanks for mentioning that -- I've fixed it up.

Nifty script, but you should update your description (or maybe even add a screenshot) to show what exactly the script does! I'm by no means tech un-savvy, but it took me while to figure out you had to hover over the username (and not the symbols). But other than that, cool script.
Now, most of it has already been said (your conversation with `BoffinbraiN e.g.), but really, some of the descriptions are just false (for the time being):
#: "Art Group Member" - No Longer in Use, so you can chuck that. Actually, you could update this to use for chatrooms: Written down via :#devart: and you get #devart
Β£: "Minister of dA" - This is actually no April fools joke but an "Officially run deviantART account"
+: "Group"?? According to the FAQ that's still a General Administrator. IF you wanna use the + for Groups (once it's released) then fine, but for now, it's still a staff member from what I know. Or well, a "pimp", if you go to +ekud 's page..

Pretty nifty little script and quite helpful indeed! It would be great if this was part of dA already. Also, as `electricjonny already said, probably anyone that's capable of installing a script probably already knows

We definitely need a more intuitive status system. This works well! By the way, Β£ is a Minister of deviantART, and isn't just an April Fool's joke. It's still used by Β£deviantWEAR and Β£EmoticonHQ among others.

Our status system works for what it is... it's just that it's sort of tricky to find out what things mean when you're a newbie. The info is off in a FAQ somewhere.

BoffinBrain In reply to kemayo [2008-09-28 23:39:49 +0000 UTC]
Definitely not arguing with that. I'm just saying that you script's descriptions should probably reflect exactly what the status says otherwise people will go to deviantWEAR and think it's an April Fool's joke.

kemayo In reply to BoffinBrain [2008-09-30 05:15:17 +0000 UTC]
It's very true.
(Another example: The description for "+" is actually horribly inaccurate, because I wrote it based on what we were talking about doing at that particular moment at the Groups Swarm, and I think we've changed our mind.)

We're not actually sure. We might steal # back.
π: 0 β©: 1
BoffinBrain In reply to kemayo [2008-10-01 00:50:04 +0000 UTC]
Ooh... That might not be such a great choice, since everyone knows # is for chat rooms, and + is much less frequently used.
Unless, of course, chat rooms and groups become synonymous with each other...

kemayo In reply to BoffinBrain [2008-10-01 01:07:08 +0000 UTC]
We're considering doing some strong links between a group and a chat room. Again, we're sort of up in the air over it. It's not a core priority, so it might not be an early inclusion in groups.

Those must be really interesting talks. I certainly wish I could listen in on one. People who already have clubs and/or chatrooms are certainly going to hope the migration process is simple. I know that's on the agenda too. Gotta give you all the best of luck.

FAQ #106: What are the symbols in front of each deviants nickname?
π: 0 β©: 0
electricjonny [2008-09-25 23:52:14 +0000 UTC]
At some of your title's.
This is pretty handy though
I think dA should implement this into the site, since most people that know how to install GM scripts most likely know what the symbols mean. Still pretty handy for people that can't be bothered to memorize them though

I like having them though.

ok, I forgot some:
Β© - Copyright & Etiquette Administration Staff aka CEA
Β’ - Creative Staff
! - Banned Account
and these I didn't know correctly:
# Art Group Member (mostly unused now)
Β£ - Minister of dA (April Fools)
+ - Group
then again, I don't see much activity from them, except for one of the +.
can I has cookies, now?

$ is for paid staff, ^ is for gallery directors, ~ is for non-paying members, * is for subscriber-members, = is for those subscribed who want to beta-test, thus haveinc nice dA features before the * and ~, but not before the staff people. @ is for mods of the chat dAmn...
+ was the old news directors/groups staff part, from what I recall from the old days, and % was for prints quality, etc.
am I missing something?
I'm on dial-up, so I can't really download that this is what I know from memory...
oh, and ΒΊ is for alumni, which means, really old folks.
and `is for seniors...
when accompanied by a pink heart it means they were once part of the staff. :B

This is a greasemonkey script that adds a title attribute to the user link (the title attribute content is shown when you hover over the link and wait for a while - like a tooltip) with an explanation of the user symbol.
Here are couple of examples (hover over the links):
~xxSay
*xxbcxx

oh okay. i still think that instaed of those lines or *'s, when you hover over them, they should turn the backround of the script a diferent color, like deviant green for members,
pink for subcribers and rainbow for the core admin guys!

kemayo In reply to xxSay [2008-09-25 03:43:12 +0000 UTC]
Well, see, then I'd have to remember what all those colors mean instead...
