Description
~Genesis 3 Female in Poser~After all the hype, my very 1st Gen3F render in Poser with Octane (8 mins). She doesn't like Poser at all, so I had to bring her by force. LOL
Technically speaking, Gen3F poses and morphs beautifully, though only in DS4.8 and nowhere else. Any attempts to export to FBX or COLLADA failed to load correctly in Poser. All parts and materials load up, but the clothing and hair are scattered across the scene.
The only option was to export to raw OBJ, and rebuild the materials in Octane. The material paths seem correct in the OBJ, but [I think] Poser can't read paths with spaces in them, so I have to manually copy all the scene maps to the OBJ folder. If not, Poser will ask me to locate each map, even if they are all in the same folder (duh!). Exporting to FBX creates a folder with all the maps, so that saves me the trouble of having to locate them manually. As a side note, exporting from DS for some reason does not include any transparency maps, so I had to reconnect them manually.
One could expect FBX and COLLADA to resolve all of the above, but in my experience these "universal" file formats have so many versions, which create a lot of incompatibility. Maybe there is a specific version of FBX or COLLADA that could make perfect transition between Poser and DS, but I haven't found which one - if any - this far.
I have played a bit with i-ray in DS, but I quickly grew impatient because it takes anything between 10s to half a minute to show any updates. Having to wait this long to see any material or light adjustments takes just too long. I also cannot edit anything while it's rendering. That's why I felt an urge to bring the entire scene to render in Poser with Octane, where I have instant updates for any changes I do, without having to stop the render. I-ray was also taking forever to clear the noise (even at small sizes), while Octane finished the final 1200p render in 8 minutes.
Very worth the try, and I now have a pipeline I can use when I want to render Gen3F in Poser. I am used to always rebuilding all materials in Octane, so at least this part is the usual for me. Hope you like it and thanks for coming by!

Thank you! If SMS could fix the OBJ importer, this could be really easy to handle. ^^

lovely render, but really appreciate the render "backstory. " Β it suggests some options for my own cross platform issues.
thanks

Thanks! It takes some gymnastics to render her in Poser, but it was worth it comparing to how long it would take with Iray. Not mention all my library is in Poser. ^^

Poser has always had a tendency to require us to re-assign any and all texture maps associated with an OBJ import. I've frequently built entire 'sections' of a scene, exported them together as OBJ's and upon re-import as a single OBJ, needed to manually point Poser's nose to where the maps were located again. And this is going back as far as Poser 5. So yes, that quirk has always been there.Β
For what it's worth though - I think this came out lovely. And I normally don't like pinup-styled renders. This one however, is quite nice.
As far as Iray goes - if I'm remembering correctly, it IS possible to set the new DS to use the old 3Delight render engine instead of Iray if you prefer it. I seem to recall it being something in the render settings where you can choose which render engine to use. From what I've seen of other folks and their Iray discussions, it does seem to be far too slow to be practical in most cases. Even worse if you are having to render via CPU instead of GPU. I think I'll stick to my 4.7 for now.

I noticed that Poser gets all textures Ok if I move all files to the same folder where the OBJ is, and remove the paths from the MTL file. This proves the problem is with the handling of paths. The importer cannot handle paths with spaces, and adding double quotes (like we do with CR2s) won't help. I will report this as a bug to SMS.
I think Iray is Ok - it's I who am spoiled with how darn FAST and responsive Octane really is. Once we get used to that, everything else pales in comparison. But it wouldn't make sense to switch to 3Delight because iRay uses different materials and lights, so I would have to redo everything in the scene. Not to mention the rendering quality is not comparable, since Iray is unbiased and can achieve photo-real quality (like Octane and Lux). Nonetheless, I think it must be awesome for those who cannot afford Octane to have Iray for FREE with the equally free DAZ Studio. For the rest of us, once we are rotten spoiled with Octane, it's hard to look back.

Oh, I agree that it's a great bonus for the folks who can't afford Octane.
I wouldn't personally have the patience to deal with the slow render times myself, and I can manage to get some pretty good renders out of 3Delight if I put my mind to it. It's all in the settings. But Iray is still tempting... I'm just going to wait until 4.8 is out of Beta, I think. Or at least until Daz has had some time to fine-tune the engine and such.
I understand completely not wanting to switch to the other render engine though, if the materials are all that different. Octane is still on my wishlist, though! LOL

You can think of 3Delight and Firefly materials as "synthetic", while Octane, Lux and Iray are "physically-based". For example, Poser/DS materials have no concept of what metal, plastic or wood materials are. We can imitate them but they don't exist natively. As for lights, Poser/DS are only an approximation of real light should behave. Octane, Lux and Iray have physically-based lights that behave as expected. We cannot mix and match those things - each can only be used in one environment or the other. In other words, Poser/DS materials, cameras, and lights cannot be used in Octane/Lux/Iray and vice-versa.
I think DS will always be in Beta, and this is good as it gets. Some updates add new functionality, some break some of the existing ones (quite common), and some change everything. LOL

I think for me, the decision not to switch to Iray is primarily due to the render times. Frankly, several hours for a simple portrait? The kinds of scenes I build would take 24 hours or more if that's the case. I regularly have entire forests, LAMH animals, 5-10 figures plus other assorted props in a scene! But I will freely admit that the renders it produces are quite lovely.
I do not have an Nvidia card; I work on a Toshiba laptop with an i7 and on-board GPU, and it's not Nvidia. I would end up having to render via CPU, which I'm told slows the render times down even further. I think I'll wait until I can afford Octane or Reality.
Thanks for taking the time to explain the materials/lights - that does answer my question of why they can't be used on both sides of the rendering fence. I've been wondering about that for quite a while now. ^_^
DS absolutely will always be 'in development', yes. It seems to be the "career student" of the CG software arena. That's not inherently a bad thing, though it would be nice if they 'fixed what they broke' every so often. (Hey, a girl can still pipe dream! LOL)

Oh my, 3D rendering on a laptop is not quite ideal. But I guess we have to use whatever we have in hands.

Either that, or I am spoiled with Octane being so darn fast! Β I am eager to see the new Reality 4 update that is claimed to boost rendering speed by more than 10X, even on CPU only. Paolo said it would be coming soon. ^^

Unlickly cannot afford the price of a different render engone. I still use 3Delight (who as bevome really fast with DAZ 4.8 and my new PC) using iRay when i must do a really impressive work.

Maybe that doesn't matter so much now that DS ships with a free unbiased renderer. ^^
