They were aligned digitally in Adobe Illustrator block by block.

Photoshop would have been easier. Just pixel based small imagery and then scale it up. I guess my two cents isn't enough for this $25 ring lol

Vectors don't pixelate no matter how huge or tiny you make them, though; they're smooth no matter what. Pixels are a set size and only have so much wiggle-room before the image quality degrades. If you wanted to make an image to use on business cards and billboards, you'd use Illustrator. Photoshop is good for photomanipulation, Illustrator is good for design.

It's easy enough to do straight lines in Illustrator, it's just a matter of which software you're more familiar with. Most people don't touch Illustrator because they learned Photoshop inside and out first, and Illustrator is a completely foreign language. I had one class with Illustrator, and that's not nearly enough for me to prefer it over Photoshop for most things. But some people learn Illustrator really well, for a job or a hobby, and use it for nearly everything.
