Description One of the rules in the Wile E. Coyote and Roadrunner shorts is that the characters mustn't talk (No Dialogue ever), except 'meep meep' and screaming in pain. This rule was inspired from contemporary silent films and their stars, like Charlie Chaplin. Therefore, communication is mostly done through picket signs that basically convey the character's thoughts to each other (and the audience), albeit silently. There are exceptions to this rule, like in Zoom at the Top (1962), where the coyote says 'ouch' after getting hurt by an ACME giant bear trap.

One example of the rule is this comedic screenshot from Stop! Look! and Hasten! (1954)

Wile E Coyote successfully ran away from a train that was about to crash into him, or so he thought! Cause yet ANOTHER train came from inside the rock face, where Wile E stood. The Coyote then held up a circular picket sign with the words 'STOP IN THE NAME OF HUMANITY' but since he's not a human, nothing happened except for the massive crash.
