Description
Athens, Greece.Sunday, 10 March 2013.
With the motto "Poverty, unemployment, suicides. Enough is enough!" hundreds of protesters gathered at Syntagma Square in central Athens. Riot police lined up in front of the Parliament and tried to repel the crowd with the use of shields and chemicals.
Sundayβs rally came as the Greek government negotiates with the so-called "troika" of inspectors from the European Commission, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The troika returned to Athens last week to discuss the next steps in a painful austerity and reform program aiming to pull Greece out of the economic crisis.
The Greeks followed the Portuguese who held massive demonstrations across Portugal against austerity policies, last Saturday. The Athens protest ended in minor scuffles between demonstrators and police.
The Greek middle class is suffering from austerity measures and from rising unemployment. This is the main reason why strikes and demonstrations are often taking place in Athens and other cities of the country.

Great shot.
It takes balls to stand so close to riot police, usually they're not known for their social skills and when things start to get hot they hit anyone that gets in their path, protesters, bystanders or reporters.
The picture has a very beautiful asimmetry in wich the left side is totally aligned and ordered (the police line and the street lights), and on the right side the chaotic disposition of the protesters. The pavement road lines and the ppoint of view mark the axis.
On the social comment of the picture there's so much to be said that i could take hours writing about the subject. Just to note that i'm spanish, live in Portugal and i'm an architecht (being an architecht in this side of the globe is synonymous to unemployment), so this recession hit me from all sides. And what people are failing to realize now is the level of suffering that EU politics is imposing on its own citizens, because even if you have a job you wont make it to the end of the month.
Cheers and good luck

It is happening here too Jordan.
Driving through my city, I get so sad when I see
how many places have closed down.
It is almost like a ghost town. The strong are getting stronger,
don't get me wrong, but the poor or even the middle class is really
suffering.
