So she swam into the box, and instantly flopped onto the floor because she didn't have legs. She was helped (more hauled) in through the door, and given a pool to swim in. Then they set about working on a way to get her to see new worlds while still being able to breathe and not dry out.

At some point in the history of earth a certain alien lands with his ship a the deepest points of the oceans. To his disadvantage, the 90 years old alien forgot, that his ship may look like a small blue box from the outside, but in reality is big enough to store a whole galaxy in the inside. This fact came back to him, when he opened the doors to his ship leeting in the 1 billion cubic metre of water.
The oceans were drained in just a little less than an hour and it took him about 500 years to get it all back.
By than the alien became an old, grey man and decided that his own niece would be a much better companion than a mermaid.
