Description
A crow flew to meKept its distance
Such a proud creation
I saw its soul, envied its pride
But needed nothing it had
--Nightwish, “The Crow, the Owl and the Dove”
The first “element” of the complete “Deeper Down” piece features lead character Garrod Ran and the crow as mentioned in the song. I felt this was a very easy parallel, as Garrod is often shown to be very brash and proud, and even the “kept its distance” line fits how he and Jamil interact early in the series. Initially, Garrod sees Jamil as the bad guy, trying to hurt Tiffa and do bad things to her, but soon learns that it’s the very opposite, and he has to learn to build that trust.
This was the first part of the full project I drew, and it surprisingly didn’t take me very long, even with having to delve through Google image search for good crow reference photos. Garrod is already a pretty easy character for me to draw, and I took a lot of cues from my old artwork, as well as official art. I chose to make the inner border in shades of red because I wanted another color to add more variety to the piece and complement the green tones in the hair and eyes, and also to represent the red in his jacket that isn’t shown here.
I did each of these “elements” separately so that they could stand on their own as works of art and so the character featured in each of them could get equal appreciation, and I think it particularly shows here. While it does show more of the hallmarks of being hand-drawn at this size, you can also see and appreciate more of the detail that you just can’t see in the full composition.
