Description The Monument is a giant column built as a sort of memorial to the Great Fire of London in 1666. Now it's more a monument to tourists, though quite good value at £3 or so to climb up.

It's got lots and lots of steps to the top, a pretty short rail and a yawning chasm in the middle that reaches all the way up - all this combined to give me quite a bit of vertigo!

However, that great interior space also makes for quite an interesting spiral stairs shot which I couldn't resist. Unfortunately because it's so dark in there I had to rest the camera on its back on the floor (this is a 15 sec exposure, I think) and in doing so had to squat on the floor - not a very dignified position for those poor tourists behind me!

Once again you have shown me that pictures of stairways are some awesome visual mindfucks.
