Description Inspired by my good friend and fellow DA member, Gulliver63, for his excellent and humorous take on the Twilight Zone episode, "Number 12 Looks Just Like You," I have decided to submit my own version of my favorite Twilight Zone episode "A Game of Pool"  starring the late Jack Klugman and Jonathan Winters in which a brash young pool shark, Jessie Cardiff, would give anything to play and beat the legendary pool champion, "Fats" Brown.  For the role of Jessie, I've picked none other than Futurama's hapless schlub, Philip J. Fry, and for the role of "Fats" Brown, a cartoon portrait of yours truly, kiff57krocker.  As the viewer can see, Jessie is sweating like a plowhorse, because at stake is Jessie's life if he loses the game. (Medium: pen and ink, colored pens, airbrush)
Twilight Zone (C) CBS and Cayuga Prod.
Futurama (C) 20th Century Fox and Matt Groening.

Damn good episode, though I was wondering if Jonathan Winters was having troubles in trying to keep his humor under control.  I think it was about this time when he placed himself into an institution to help get his run-away humor under control.

Well I really don't know about that part of Jonathan Winters' life.  Still, he did an excellent dramatic portrayal of a pool champion who came to give a snarky pool shark his comeuppance.  This also is one of my all time favorite Twilight Zone episodes.  Thanks for your comment.

I read a Playboy interview of him.  He felt that things were getting out of control, so he voluntarily went in to help.  Seemed to have done him some good.  And this episode was Klugman's third time of TZ, I believe.

Really?  I guess I'll have to Google that Playboy interview with Jonathan Winters.  And yes, I believe this was Klugman's third TZ appearance.

When I went to Ask.com about Klugman, it did mention that fact.  And the Winter's interview was sometime about the early 1970's, I believe.

It was one of the very few interviews I've read in that magazine.  Wanted to read Ray Bradbury's address to the 1974 graduating class at Annapolis.

The three maxims of writing he stressed were:  Start your story; finish your story; and get it published.  I think I've finally accomplished that task so far.

Bradbury's formula for writing sounds practical and to the point.  And if it influenced your writing talents, then I'd say your goal to become a published scribe is well under way.

I thank you for the comment.  Those three statements are what got me going down a literary path.

Ah yes, I recall that episode...was unique seeing Johnathan Winters playing a dramatic role, and he pulled it off flawlessly.

Outstanding job on this.

Thank you kindly.  I'm happy to know that this artwork, though four years old, is still getting rave reviews.  Thanks for the comment.

ah, but.. if I remember, the winner has to play against every up-and-comer, FOREVER!

Still, Fry'd be a good candidate. He might not have the smarts of the original Jessie, but, he's got the know-it-all attitude!

Good work!

Thank you kindly.  If you look at the date of submission, you'll see that this is one of my earliest artworks.  I had fun creating this, mainly because I got to include a cartoon portrait of myself as "Fats Brown," thus also paying a tribute to the cameo appearances of Alfred Hitchcock in his movies.  And yes, Fry makes for an ideal spoof of Jessie Cardiff.  Thanks for your comment.

Thank you kindly.  This is one of my favorite "Twilight Zone" episodes, so naturally I had to have my cartoon alter-ego appear in my version.  Thank you for your comment.

Nice pic and great details. I also like the foggy background, adds to ominous and desperate situation Jessie found himself in. Though not a Twilight Zone aficionado I do vaguely remember this episode. I remember seeing some of the great actors giving early appearances on that show. And I was a fan of both Jack Klugman and Jonathan Winters too.

Your observation of my background is spot on!  A weird, foggy effect was just what I was going for as a background when I drew this pic.  The effect was accomplished with an airbrush.  Thank you kindly for your comment.

I hope you don't mind - I just referred this to a Twilight Zone group. This is really a great pic, and the episode is a classic. I'm pondering a TZ/Family Guy with "Eye of the Beholder" sometime.

It seems I already went to the Twilight Zone group and submitted this art and was accepted, but I don't mind if a friend of mine does the same for me, as long as he lets me know about it.  I had a lot of fun making this pic, especially putting a cartoon portrait of yours truly in the pic as I've always had an affinity for Alfred Hitchcock's style of appearing in cameo in his movies.  And that episode is a favorite of mine since I also enjoy a good game of pool.  Thank you kindly for your comment.

I really want to do a second Meg X; maybe as a Halloween pic (I like to do a Halloween card every year). I watched "Charlie X" at the library tonight and got screen grabs. I forgot that he turned one gal into an iguana, which would be a hilarious gag for Meg.

Oh please, don't do that.  I like Meg too much and I also like to portray her in a more positive light.  Perhaps the scene in "Charlie X" where he forces Mr. Spock to spout inane drivel could be used with Meg doing that to Peter or Chris.  Mull it over.

How about having Meg as the eponymous character in "The Empath"?

I just think she's so fun like that. At the end of Castaway, when they did their Indiana Jones gag, she's shown falling over dead with a thousand darts in her back. She's always shown as being helpless; I think it's funny to show her as being really powerful. Anyway, Halloween is coming and there are lots of ideas to throw around. I'm looking forward to pulling out some of my scary movies and enjoying the holiday.

You and me both, although most of my scary films are classic science fiction.  My particular favorite is "Invaders from Mars."  When I first saw that film on TV back when I was a grammar school kid, it scared the living hell out of me.  For weeks after that, I wouldn't go near any open fields for fear that there might be an alien space ship buried under the ground there.

War of the Worlds was pretty scary for me as a kid. Also, when I first saw the "bubblegum" monster thingees from "The Prisoner," those were pretty scary as well. When I got older, "Colossus: The Forbin Project" and "The Day After" used to scare the Hershey squirts out of me.

I'll admit, when I saw "The Prisoner" series the bubble monsters (they were called "rovers") were pretty scary to me too.

They scared the mess out of me; I first saw that show in a hotel room in New York as a kid and just the thought of someone suffocating...

Oh yes.  The idea of being covered by a giant bubble and the feeling of suffocating is very scary to me as well.
