Wow. You truly went through the full height and length of the classic childhood fear of monsters. It's really amazing, in a way. XD
But, yes, I was afraid of monsters, actually. But by the age when I became aware of the idea that monsters supposedly lived under children's beds waiting to devour them, my brother and I were sleeping in the same room on a bunk bed, and I was top bunk. So I knew they'd eat him instead of me. And when I finally moved to the bottom bunk, I was a firm believer in the idea that surrounding myself with stuffed animals somehow warded them off. So I always just barricaded myself into my little bunk bed-slash-bunker and felt safe. XD
As for how I heard about the flying purple people eaters, my dad used to like to sing that song, among many others~

I used to surround myself with stuffed animals and think that if tentacles came up to grab me they would instead grab the bears by accident and I would have enough time to scream or run away ^^ (my cat Polly used to also sleep with me as monster bait 
And as for your dad singing, you poor soul.. My dad used to sing to us when we got older "Oh, you big and burly truckers~" and uhh, "I'm a lumberjack and I'm okay" XD if only I had a ipod back then that I could have drowned out the horrible songs with *le sigh* XD ~kat

Oh, yes, pets make great bait and/or protectors. I use my cats and dog as "guardians" to keep any insects, spiders, or other icky things from coming to bug me in the night. It's worked well thus far. XD
What is with fathers and singing? It's strange. My mother only ever sang a single song to me, and it was only when I was little. But my father has, like, a whole playlist in his head that he sings throughout the day every day. He's an ipod in and of himself. XD
Ish. It is these little things, such as the fear of flying purple people eaters, that made us into the people we are today! X3

Yeah, my mother sings only when sheβs really hyper or happy and then she dances with it and in three minutes sheβs back to normal, but my dad will sit and sing for (literally) HOURS in the car, in the shower, doing to dishes, mowing the lawn, cooking, cleaning, and just sitting at the counter!! D: I don't mind it much, I like m father singing, but O__- Its like constant.. XD
