The expedition's supply ship waited at Base camp for any sign of the overland party, despite the sea ice that had already started to reclaim the bay.
Everyone knew the difficulties that overwintering at Base camp would bring the explorers, but the captain had already strained her orders to the point of insubordination.
She sensed the uneasiness in her crew and knew there was no more time. If she waited any longer the ship would become trapped and crushed by the ice.
She gave the order to unload their supplies and depart.
