Chapter 23 - Mastermind
The group descended down the dark, red cave. So far, it was a wide tunnel with a series of twists and turns that went down. Siss and Haydn placed torches down as they went. Later at a certain part of the cave, Simon’s sculk sensors clicked.
“Wait.” he said.
“What’s wrong, Simon?” Envy asked.
“I hear something coming up ahead.” Simon answered.
“What is it?” Haydn asked. The sounds of skittering echoed from the tunnel. Everyone turned around, expecting another bloody monster, but nothing was there. The skittering stopped as well. The group was starting to feel a bit uneasy. Envy looked up at the ceiling as she saw something move. A blood crawler spider then dropped down from above her. Envy quickly pulled out her cobalt shield and bounced the blood crawler away from herself. The blood crawler screeched as it tumbled down the dark tunnel. A loud thud echoed from the tunnel.
“What the heck?” Bonnie said. The group then walked to the end of the tunnel, only to find a dark abyss. “Sombra, what is this?” Bonnie asked.
“I think this is a bigger section of the cave.” Sombra answered. Envy looked down and saw red lights glowing at the bottom.
“Babe, come on.” she said. Both of them glided down to the source of the light.
“Envy, wait!” Sombra said. But it was too late. “Babe, get the ropes.”
“On it!” Haydn said. Envy and Simon reached the bottom. As they looked around them, they noticed they were surrounded by a bunch of altars similar to the ones from the Corruption, but made of flesh and eyeballs. They were also the source of the red light.
“Look at these things, Simon.” Envy said.
“I know, they’re so gross-looking.” Simon said in disgust. A rope was then lowered in between him and Envy. They were both startled at first.
“Incoming!” Haydn shouted from above. The two looked up and saw him, Siss, Bonnie and Sombra climbing down from it. The four of them got off as they reached the bottom.
“Oh hey! You made it!” Envy said.
“Envy, next time you decide to jump down somewhere random, please let us know.” Sombra said. Siss placed down another torch, and so did Haydn. Siss looked over to the left and saw the blood crawler from earlier, dead. She screamed as she saw it. The others looked and saw it too.
“What is that thing?” Bonnie asked.
“That is the weirdest spider I’ve ever seen.” Haydn said.
“Looks like it’s dead.” Envy said.
“Come on guys.” Sombra said. As she walked past the dead blood crawler, the blood crawler’s legs suddenly twitched. The others looked back at the blood crawler for a second before it leaped out at Sombra and fell down into a hole with her.
“Babe!” Haydn cried.
“Sombra!” Envy cried as well. She jumped down the hole. The others jumped down after her. As they landed, Sombra could be seen struggling against the blood crawler. Envy shot a darkrune fireball at, knocking it off of her friend. The blood crawler tumbled into a glowing red hole, screeching in pain as it burned. Bonnie then lit a bomb and tossed it into the hole. The bomb exploded and made the hole grow dark and silent. As this happened, Envy felt something she hasn’t felt in a while. Her and the others felt a horrible chill go down their spines.
“Ok, did anybody else feel a chill go down their spine all of a sudden, cause I did?” Simon asked.
“This feeling…I’ve felt this before…” Envy said. She then shook her head. “I don’t think it’s a big deal though.”
“Babe!” Haydn cried as he ran over to Sombra. “Sombra, are you ok? Are you hurt?” he asked.
“No, Sweetie. I’m fine.” Sombra said. Bonnie walked into the hole where she tossed the bomb.
“Guys, I found a gun!” she shouted. Bonnie climbed out of the hole with an undertaker revolver in her hand. Later, the group exited the hole and noticed more of them. At first, Bonnie wanted to go explore one by herself, but Envy said no. Just then, Simon’s sculk sensors clicked again. Envy asked him what he heard this time, and Simon said
“I hear something coming from that hole.”
“Well, what is it, Simon?” Bonnie asked.
“It sounds like rustling,” Simon said as he described the vibrations, “almost like someone trying to escape a giant spider web or something.” The others looked at each other, concerned. They then decided to go down the hole with him. As the group descended into the hole, a beating noise can be heard echoing from ahead. Eventually they ended up in a small room. In the center however, was a floating beating heart that gave off a red light. The group stood in disgust as they stared at the writhing crimson heart. Envy stepped closer to it. It had to be one of the creepiest things she had ever seen. She then looked up as she heard a rustling noise from above. In the blood red light, she could see a small figure stuck in a crimson spider web. The figure was struggling to escape. Envy gasped.
“Envy, what’s wrong?” Bonnie asked. Envy fluttered up and grabbed the figure from the web as she dropped back down. Bonnie, Siss, and Sombra were in utter shock when she brought the figure into the torchlight from one of the torches that were placed down. The figure was a recognizable blue creature with wings. However, it had a mark on its face that was in the shape of a spade.
“Envy, is that…..an allay?” Sombra asked. Envy nodded. The three girls huddled around her. Simon and Haydn joined in as well.
“What is that?" Haydn asked.
"That’s an allay, Haydn." Envy said. "It's a creature from our world."
"It looks like one of the ones we freed from Lord Drax’s mansion." Sombra said. "I recognize that mark on its face."
"But how did it end up here?" Siss asked. Just then, the allay opened its eyes. It then shot up in the air as if it just woke up from a really bad dream. The allay looked down at its arms and then at the tattered spider web.
“I’m free?” the allay said to himself. “I’m free!”
“Hi.” Envy said. The allay looked down and saw Envy and the others.
“Oh, hi. Are you the one who saved me?” the allay asked.
“Yes.” Envy answered. The allay then swooped down in excitement and hugged her.
“Thank you!” he said, gratefully.
“Hey there, little guy." Sombra said. The allay turned and looked at Sombra.
“Hi.” he said.
“Do you remember us from the mansion?” Sombra asked.
“Huh?” the allay said in confusion. Then he recognized the girls. “Wait a second.” he said as he looked at the other girls. “I know you guys! You’re the heroes that set me and my friends free!”
“Yup, that’s us.” Bonnie said. The allay then fluttered back up at eye level.
“It’s such an honor to meet all of you!” the allay said. “My name’s Spade, as you can tell by the birthmark on my face. ”
“I’m Envy,” Envy said, “and this is Bonnie, Siss, and Sombra.” Spade then looked over to Simon and Haydn.
“And who are those two?” he asked.
“That’s Simon and Haydn.” Envy answered.
“Ah.” Spade said. “Quick question, where are we?”
“We’re sorry, but we’re a bit lost too.” Siss said.
“Spade, what do you remember happening before you came here?” Envy asked.
“It was all a flash, but I can try to give the best description.” Spade said. “As me and the other allays were fleeing from the mansion, there was this beacon shooting out from the roof. I remember I was scared. The beacon then turned into this portal-like thing and began to suck the world around it. I tried my best to not let it get me, but its force was so strong. I then woke up in a strange jungle. I said strange, because something about it looked different. In fact, the entire world looked different.” As Spade continued talking, Haydn turned his head at the crimson heart. He slowly walked towards it. Simon then turned to look at him as he stood in front of the crimson heart.
“Haydn, what are you doing?” he asked. As the others turned to look, Haydn smashed the crimson heart with one of his shadownite hammers, making a loud squish. As the red light dimmed, the group was startled as they heard screams echo around them.
“Wh…what was that?” Spade asked, nervously.
“Haydn, what did you do?” Sombra asked.
“Sombra, look!” Haydn said, “I found this inside of the crimson heart!” He held out a crimson rod. Sombra took the crimson rod from him and examined it.
“What is this?” she asked.
“I don’t know, but it looks like a magic weapon.” Haydn replied. As soon as he said that, more skittering echoed throughout the room.
“Uhh, why do I hear more skittering?” Siss asked, nervously. Envy noticed another tunnel across the room. As she squinted she could see a glimpse of a horde of blood crawlers approaching.
“Guys, run!” she cried. The group immediately ran out of the hole as the blood crawlers chased after them. As they made it back to the main chamber, there were more blood crawlers coming out of the other holes. The group tried to fight them back, but there were just too many of them. A blood crawler then pounced onto Siss, and they both fell down a hole.
“Siss!” Bonnie cried. She tried to go after her, but more blood crawlers came over and blocked her path. A huge explosion then went off in the hole. The blast was so powerful that it shook the cave. As this happened, the blood crawlers froze as the sounds of bursting flesh echoed from the holes. There was a moment of silence. All the blood crawlers then scurried away.
"They’re retreating!?" Simon said.
"Wonder why." Haydn said. Envy then noticed that Siss was missing.
"Wait, where's Siss?" She asked.
"Envy, she fell down here!" Bonnie shouted. Envy flew over and jumped down the hole with her. That was when Spade turned around and saw something. Bonnie and Envy found Siss lying on a ledge.
"Siss, are you ok?" Envy asked as she shook her. Siss opened her eyes.
"Yeah, I'm fine." She groaned.
"Thank god." Bonnie said. Envy stepped back a little to give Siss some space when she heard a clang on the ground. She looked down and saw a rotted fork spear by her foot. She picked up the rotted fork and examined it. Bonnie and Siss saw Envy holding the spear.
"What is that, Envy?" Siss asked.
"I don't know. It's some kind of spear." Envy answered. Suddenly, the girls heard Spade scream. They rushed back up immediately. When they reached the main chamber, they found the others coming face to face with the Brain of Cthulhu. Spade was hiding behind Sombra’s shoulder, shivering in fear. Simon turned around as he heard Envy, Bonnie and Siss climbing back up.
“You found her!” he cried.
“About time,” Haydn said. “A little help?” A huge swarm of creeper eyeballs appeared and swarmed around the brain. They then turned their gaze at the group as the Brain of Cthulhu ordered them to attack. Everyone scattered as the creepers swarmed after them. Sombra started shooting water bolts all over the place. It was very effective against the creepers, as the water bolts bounced all over the place. Sombra then spotted the Brain of Cthulhu floating around. As she took out her crimson rod and waved it, a crimson cloud appeared above the brain and started to drip blood on it. Sombra then took out her aqua scepter and sprayed the Brain of Cthulhu, but the brain looked like it was taking no damage.
“What the?” Sombra frantically said. The Brain of Cthulhu then disappeared. Spade frantically flew all over the place. A creeper was about to hit him, when a spear was then shot into it. Spade looked over and saw Siss standing in behind a line of ballistas. He then rushed over to Siss and held onto her, tightly.
“You ok?” Siss asked.
“Yeah.” Spade answered. More creepers swarmed around them. As Siss lashed her spinal tap at them, the Brain of Cthulhu reappeared behind her. Spade looked and saw the brain slowly approaching. “Siss, behind you!” he cried. Siss turned around and saw the brain. Both her slime and finch minions attacked it, but they did no damage. Siss smacked the Brain of Cthulhu with her spinal tap, still no damage.
“Why can’t I hurt this thing!?” Siss cried. The Brain of Cthulhu vanished again. “Where did it go?” Siss asked. Two shadownite hammers flew through the air, destroying a ton of creepers in the process. As one hammer returned to Haydn’s hand, Haydn swung it at the creepers that were floating around him. Eventually, the Brain of Cthulhu reappeared right in front of him. Haydn saw the brain slowly floating towards him with its tendrils wiggling.
“There you are!” he yelled. He then swung both of his shadownite hammers at the Brain of Cthulhu. This time however, it actually took damage. As the hammers came back to him, Haydn used his cloud in a bottle to double jump and smashed both of them on the Brain of Cthulhu. There was a loud gong. The Brain of Cthulhu was on the ground. As Haydn landed, he saw the brain was unconscious. He then celebrated. “Is that all you got? Ha ha ha!” he shouted. But as Haydn turned away, the Brain of Cthulhu suddenly rose back up. Haydn turned back around and saw the brain. The Brain of Cthulhu tore its front side open as it roared, revealing a giant heart with an eyeball inside it. It then rammed itself into Haydn, knocking him far. Haydn grunted as he hit the wall. The Brain of Cthulhu twitched as it felt something puncture its backside. It turned around and saw Bonnie pointing her handguns at it. The brain vanished before she could open fire. Bonnie looked around in confusion. The Brain of Cthulhu reappeared behind her and charged towards her. Bonnie quickly turned around and shot the brain. The Brain of Cthulhu screeched as the bullets were shot into it. It then vanished again.
“You sneaky little bastard.” Bonnie said. “Is that really all you can do?” The Brain of Cthulhu reappeared in front of her. This time however, it created three other mirror images of itself. Bonnie was shocked as all of the brains spun around her. “Wh-what the!?” Bonnie said. She shot one brain, but the bullets phased right through it. The brains then closed in on Bonnie. Bonnie frantically shot in every direction, but it was no use. The real Brain of Cthulhu rammed into Bonnie as its mirror images closed in on itself. Bonnie crashed into a wall.
“Hey, you big bully!” Envy yelled. The Brain of Cthulhu turned around as it felt a yoyo hit its back. Simon and Envy were standing together, holding hands. The Brain of Cthulhu created its mirror images again and circled around them. Simon and Envy then stood behind each other, back to back.
“So uh, what’s the plan?” Simon asked, a little nervous.
“I have no idea.” Envy answered. The brains then closed in on them.
“Lookout!” Simon cried as he teleported away. Envy quickly dodge rolled out of the way. Just then, she heard Spade calling her name. She looked and saw him flying towards her with two objects in his hands.
“Envy, take these!” he said as he handed her two potions. Envy looked down at the potions.
"Spade, what are these?" She asked.
"Ok ok." Spade said. "Long story short, I drank one of these potions once, and I could see entities through walls." He then looked over Envy’s shoulder and saw the Brains of Cthulhu spinning around Simon. “Envy, your friend!” he cried. Envy quickly turned around and saw her love in trouble. Simon teleported away as soon as the brains tried to close in on him. “Quick, the potion!” Spade cried once more. Envy drank one of the potions. She looked around and saw nothing different. But when she looked over to Simon, she noticed that both him and one of the brains were highlighted red in her vision. With that, Envy flew over.
"You know, for a brain like you, you truly are a mastermind." Simon said. As the Brains of Cthulhu began to close in on him, Envy rushed in and attacked the real one. "Envy!" Simon said as he saw Envy. Envy landed next to him as the Brain of Cthulhu vanished.
"Babe, drink this." She said as she handed him the second potion. Simon chugged it down and threw the bottle to the ground. The brain reappeared with more mirror images of itself and spun around the couple once more. Envy flung her valor yoyo at the real Brain of Cthulhu while Simon continuously bashed it with the Shield of Cthulhu. Simon then slashed it with his Excalibur. The Brain of Cthulhu was knocked into a wall. With the last of its strength, it created two more mirror images of itself and charged towards the couple. Before Envy and Simon could deliver the final blow however, the Brain of Cthulhu then split into pieces as a shadownite hammer flew right through it. Blood splattered everywhere. The couple opened their eyes to see the hammer return to Haydn’s hand.
"Ha ha! Did you really think I was done with you, you stupid brain?" He shouted.
"Bruh, that was our kill!" Simon yelled.
"Hey, I just saved y'all the trouble. You're welcome." Haydn said.
"Well we appreciate the help, Haydn." Envy said as she picked up the Brain of Cthulhu treasure bag and tissue samples.
"Yo, Envy!" Bonnie shouted. "There’s these tissue samples everywhere." Sombra appeared nearby Envy with a handful of tissue samples.
"You think we can make armor with this, like with the shadow scales?" She asked.
"I would assume so." Envy answered.
"You’re ok!" Siss said as she rushed over.
"Hey, Siss." Bonnie said as she approached. Spade then came out of nowhere and hugged Siss tightly. Siss giggled as she fell over.
"Come on guys, let's get out of here." Envy said. The others nodded. With that, they all pulled out their magic mirrors and disappeared in a flash of blue light.
