Description
The walk back to the Nest took forever and no time at all simultaneously. Nimh walked the well-known path automatically, her paws knowing the way even when her vision was blurred at the edges, her mind unfocused and still reeling from the events that had unfolded this day.
She had left with strict orders given that NO ONE enter that part of the Shady Nook until she had had a chance to speak, with everyone else gathered there told to return to the Nest immediately. Any wolves still needing attention from a Magister would be able to receive it from the small herbal den at the Nest instead of the well stocked Nook.
When she arrived she climbed upon a large rock, sheltered under the branches of the great oak under which the Nest was dug, the sky darkening above as the sun set, and let out a long, commanding howl.
Summoning every Vektreni back to the Nest as swiftly as they were able.
Then she stood there, still as the rock she stood upon, her eyes glaring a hole in the ground beneath her.
Slowly her packmates filtered home. Those who had been at the Shady Nook looking haggard and tired, already with knowledge of what was coming. Vieste hovering close beside her and then moving off to the side when Nimh didn’t move a muscle, sensing the tenseness of the Patron and well acquainted with her way of expression her emotions, currently swirling in a bitter mixture of rage, sadness and confusion.
Her Black Council took up places close by, none yet sure what had caused this summoning and all looking concerned.
As the murmurs of Vektren reached their peak, finally she looked up, her eyes scanning the unsettled crowd before her. She knew a day like this would come for her, eventually, but found she did not feel remotely ready for it at all.
She took a steadying breath in, closing her eyes briefly in an attempt to fortify herself for what was to come, before breathing out an unsteady exhale.
“VEKTREN!”
Her voice carried over the Nest like a wave, everyone falling silent with their ears trained upon her words, waiting for her announcement.
“Morrigan is dead.”
She swallowed the bile rising in her throat as shocked gasps rippled through everyone gathered.
“She was slain by one of those pale trespassers, one that now lies dead at the fangs of our own, but the cost of this kill was Morrigan’s life.”
She could feel the anger building in her chest, anger at the pale invaders and whatever thrice-damned purpose they had for their games.
Her voice now laced with a growl, her lips curling in a snarl as she spoke.
“From this moment forward, Vektren is no longer seeking to take prisoners. If you see one of these trespassers, KILL IT, immediately and without mercy.
We may not know what their purpose is, but from the second they sunk their fangs into the flesh of our Sister Morrigan with intent to kill they declared WAR on Vektren, and we will show them the true power of the Shunned Ones.
Do not hesitate. Do not attempt to bargain or weave silvered riddles with them. Eliminate them.
Morrigan now runs with the ranks of Senisteros, and we will fill the Sepulcher with the hearts of these invaders.”
She allowed the assembled Vektreni a second to process her words, the speech coming to her naturally from her days as Warchief.
“Give yourselves time to grieve, then return to your duties. All rules about not going outside the Nest alone stand, we cannot let another Vektreni fall prey to their filthy jaws.”
Then she turned and hopped from her perch, intending to retreat to her den with a nod of her head to Vieste and Montu, letting them know that they and the children were still welcome to join her.
Tonight was to be fraught with emotion, the grief stricken howls of her pack ringing out into the blood-red sunset as she approached the darkened entrance of her hideaway.
She glanced out at the horizon over the treetops, the entire territory bathed in the red light from the setting sun, as if the land itself wept for their loss.
All she could do was add her own voice to Vektren’s song, there was nothing more any of them could do for Morrigan now.

Nimh is left reeling from the death of Morrigan, and before she can retire and process it herself, she has an announcement to make.
Vektren needs to know...
