That huge hunk of what ever it is made out of, bit staves here, is a great protection if you keep it in front of you. Just look at the second picture, that's what the opponent sees, mainly the shield. No need to swing it around behind you like a counter weight, keep it nice and forward (even tho I had to put it in Aerial's hand, not the forearm). Quick step forward with the following leg, stab over or past the shield, and always keep it front and center.
