Locked in this comparatively spacious cell with all this relative freedom of movement, after the heartbreaking transfer from one hell to the next, and knowing that almost certainly there was something else coming… Time seemed to move even slower than before. All she could do was wait. She had no choice but to wait. She was owned by the State, controlled wholly and completely. Her fate would be what they willed it to be and nothing she could do or say would change it. And any moment now - or maybe not for weeks or months yet - someone was going to come back in and take her to that fate.

She almost wished they’d hurry up, let this interminable suspense come to an end - except that she knew what came next would be far worse than this…

So Cassie waited. She tried not to think. She sat alone, stretched out her legs - bare but for the denim shorts and thick leg irons on her ankles - looked at her bare toes, and contemplated the irrefutable fact that she was never going to be allowed to wear shoes or socks again for the rest of her life. She didn’t mind that too much, as she had only ever worn footwear for practical purposes, and a prisoner like her, trapped forever in a maximum-security orbital oubliette, had no practical need for them. She looked into the glossy blue polish on her toenails - only a few months before her arrest she had finally saved up enough money to get herself a minor nano-mod, making her nails and hair naturally grow out in her favorite color - though she still had to choose between fingers or toes, unable to afford both. So at least she was going into her new life of barefoot bondage with a fresh pedicure. The thought might have made her grin, except for the big, shiny red ball gag in her mouth. It was as glossy as her toes and as vibrant a red as her hair was blue, and just as unchanging.
