"One more time. Breathe in...Breathe out..."

"Good," the doctor said. "Hmm...your breathing sounds more...wheezy compared to your last appointment, Miss Claudia."
Claudia responded with a scoff.
"I certainly hope that you haven't taken up that death stick again."
"I haven't, Doctor Mallord," the old bear responded tartly.
He gave a look as if he didn't believe her before he quietly sighed. He pulled out his clipboard and scribbled down a few notes as he sat down across from Claudia.
"Miss Claudia. Judging from my many examinations that I took with you, it's clear that you haven't been improving on your health. Physically, and mentally," Dr. Mallord said, scanning through his papers. "How is your diet faring?"
"Fine," she answered.
Dr. Mallord hummed. "Exercise? Have you been leaving the house? Taking walks in your new town?"
"Yes, I have."
"Hmmm. I assume that you've been trying to improve your mental health, hopefully?"
Claudia didn't answer. A full frown was formed on Dr. Mallord's face as he let out a huff.
"You know, Miss Williams, your son set you up these appointments with me for a reason," he said. "I'm sure you know that I was a close friend of your husband's when he was still around. And every time he came over to see me, he would gush a whole lot about your behavior when Baines was a child. It filled me with deep concern. He would even bring him over there too sometimes.
"Baines had told me about your mental health. Poured all of his knowledge into what would help you out, and make you feel better. He cared for you even when you would lash out at him. And he still does care about you, Miss Claudia. Do you know why?"
Claudia snorted in response.
"Because he loves you. And you should acknowledge that, instead of venting to me about your former husband you had in the past and trying to get him to love you again. You both have moved on from each other, haven't you? You have someone else to love now, Claudia; Baines. You're his mother, and he's your son."
Claudia's ears were flattened, a low grumble in her throat as she glared at Dr. Mallord. There was no trace of remorse in her voice as she responded.
"He's not my son. I have no son. And he doesn't love me. He respects me. And that's the way it should be."
