Description A while ago I promised to do a new tutorial, and in the poll most people wanted to see something
about colouring hair... so here you go, I hope this is helpful to at least someone (´w` ) I'm sorry
for any spelling mistakes I might have made, English is not my first language... please bear with
me c':

I use Paint Tool SAI, but even if you're not using the same program, there might be some helpful
things for you!

Some general tips and tricks:
1. Avoid using too much black or white (unless of course you are colouring black or white hair),
as shadows and highlights can have many different colours, which makes it look more lively!
2. Also, beware of blending and softening the shade too much; hair can have both soft and hard
shadows.
3. Anime/manga may be a style that kind of simplifies reality, but hair still has structure! It
helps to keep that in mind while shading.
4. Don't be afraid to experiment! This tutorial is a guide, not a set of rules. You can add/skip steps,
do whatever you like! I never go entirely through the same process either.
5. If you're having a hard time picking colours for shading/highlights yourself, try using the
shade/multiply layer mode for shading and luminosity/screen mode for highlights (if you're using SAI).

This is probably the clearest tutorial I’ve found on coloring hair (or coloring in general, really). I do wonder if you use a separate layer for each step (except, obviously, when you clearly say “in the same layer”) - that would be my only request, is to make sure you say whether you’re working in different layers or not. It helps people like me who appreciate step-by-step instructions when getting our feet wet in digital art

Thanks a lot for your feedback! I'm glad it's clear, and I hope it was helpful.
You're right, I seem to have forgotten to mention that I made a new layer
in some parts, my bad! I'll definitely keep that in mind next time I make
a tutorial o/

Oh my god thank you! This is so useful! I don't have my tablet right now, but I definitely need to save this for when I finally get it fixed! Hair has always been my shading weak point... I love seeing your tutorials, as I love your style and it's always nice to learn how you do things!
