I just wanted to share this because I think this is a very important topic, and maybe this might help someone!

Not long after I started digital art myself, I was confused about the difference between referencing
and copying/tracing/stealing and didn't dare to use it. A group of amazing DA artists has gotten
together to spread the word about proper referencing, you can read the journal down below.

Some tips I'd like to add that might be useful?:

1. When I'm working on a piece, I like to create a separate canvas where I paste my reference images

    like these;

     It's very useful for me since I do not have all my references stored in separate folders and sometimes
     I look up pictures on Google Images while I'm working.

2. If I visit somewhere and I happen to have my phone/camera on me, I try to snap some pics of things

    that interest me as an artist/that I think are inspiring. If you're worried about 'copying', these photos
    are entirely your own and I highly doubt that the long-dead architect of some medieval church will rise
    from the grave to sue you for using a similar motif in your artworks :'D

I recall I spoke to another deviant about this, and as you have mentioned referencing is not wrong. It helps you to improve your work and refresh your memory when you're stuck on what something should look like.
