When he met the human everything fell apart and he grabbed onto them catching their necklace but not them.
I think After that the world like crumbled around him and his friends all fell into the void along with him. What caused his branch to break? A virus of sorts, slowly eating away at the 'tree' of the multiverse. Nibbling like an invasive species
That virus/bug latches onto it's prey after it falls into the void latching onto their monster soul and slowly sucking the life out of it. Simultaneously keeping them from turning to dust, but destroying their soul
