Description
*snrk* Okay, so after 70-some years of tussling with Horus over who should rightfully get Osiris's throne - the son born post-mortem or the brother who killed Osiris for it fair and square - the other gods got tired of all the drama, captured Set, and held court to decide matters. Opinions were a little mixed, but eventually they turned to the Wise and Powerful Neith, who handed down a judgment she thought was fair.Set would eventually agree.
The guy keeping Seti at bay, btw, is Geb, who wasn't much of a father to our dear chaos deity, but he always seemed to find the time to capture and hold his son. He had a gift for being pretty inescapable, being the earth and all.
This whole thing sprang up when I was trying to work on the next page of Strawberry Syrup, and drawing just wasn't cooperating... so I decided to work it out by drawing something else (which is why Neith is not my best work ever). And it is just so much fun drawing Set when he was young, back before he took up being all elegant and noble annnnnd before he realized that not all women are evil.
And apparently, in all the ancient art, Astarte's "aggression" is shown by her sporting a pair of bull's horns. She's since managed to outgrow that little habit.

*laughs* I'm glad the arrangement worked out well. ^_^ As for Set's skin color, in the mythology, he's described as having bright red hair and white skin (you'd think he'd be permanantly sunburned, being a god of the desert, but I guess we can blame it on godly powers of regeneration that he doesn't look like a lobster). The ladies were goddesses from another pantheon who were given to Set when he lost the throne of Egypt.
Alas, my webcomic has nothing to do with Egyptian mythology (I just enjoy drawing mythological scenes), but you might still enjoy it. Check it out HERE.

The valkyries are always a fun one to do, in my opinion. ^^ And you can always bring in countless jokes involving Yggdrasil, y'kno, the tree? *laughs* Or you could always go with the classic Thor or Loki, everyone loves Thor and Loki. . . I don't really have a favourite god or goddess among the Norse, to be honest, I generally adore them all XD
I'd have to say, however, it would look spectacular in your style if you were to do Odin on his throne, with Hugin and Munin to either side of him. . . Perhaps Frigga behind him, sons at his feet? -^^-
haha wow. . . I think I'll do a few of the Norse Gods m'self, now. I need to brush up on my mythology anyhow. . . We could always turn this into an art trade, if you'd like, I'd love to do one of your characters sometime. . .

*laughs* I'll have to look more into Norse (it's been a LONG time), but Odin and his ravens is tempting. An art trade sounds fine to me. Send me a note.

Ah, one last comment on this one. . . Anat and Astarte don't seem to be unhappy about being given to Set. . . Well, unhappy about being 'given' and being 'consolation prizes' but not on the whole dissapointed with Set. . .am I right on this? Do they waaaaant his boooody?

i've been poking through your gallery, and i must say i'm impressed. you have a very solid coloring style, none of that extra photo-shop glow, so it's all very clean and sharp. you got a good sense of the story's flow as well, which shows in the paneling.
in this particular piece, i would've used a more defining opening panel, for example, having set brought before neith, and showing them in the setting of neith's palace/home/whereever ( i so0o need to brush up on egyptian mythology! ) also, while you've certainly got the style of art you focus on, it makes the characters all look about the same age. you've certainly got your children and young adults down to pat, but even if neith is a goddess, her features don't define her as the older and wiser one.
i'm absolutely jealous of your clean lineart and as for the panel bordering, it's a little on the thick/heavy side, which leaves less room for the art.. totaaly adding a fav and a watch. maybe i'll learn something cool from you, eh? all for now

Hi! Thanks for stopping by, and for the in-depth comment. ^_^
Let's see... You're right about this lacking a panel that establishes setting. I have to admit, this wasn't my most well-thought-out piece to date (it just sorta sprang up when the next page of my webcomic wasn't cooperating ). I think I would have had to add a panel for that... As for why I didn't make Neith look like the older, wiser goddess that she's supposed to be, I'm taking my cues from the Egyptians there. Unless it's someone like Bes (who was depicted as a rather homely little dwarf), they tended to depict their deities as being in the prime of life in that stylized sort of way. *laughs* Sometime, I'll have to draw one of the Greeks that took a more *ahem* mature appearance and see how that turns out - or better yet, the Norse!
Augh, the panel bordering... It's something I'm not particularly happy with. I'm not sure if you have any experience with Manga Studio (which is what I use for most of my lineart), but it has this handy tool that lets you divide the page into panels so you don't have to worry about making sure all your edges line up (which is a little more difficult to do digitally than it is with a pen and ruler). I'm still trying to figure out how to change the thickness on the panel lines. If anyone out there knows, please tell me!
*laughs* If you ever have any questions, feel free to ask. Hopefully, I'll know what I did... I look forward to hearing from you again.

Okay-- first off, :3 you're welcome (I saw your comment on my front page.) And how COULD I NOT fav this? It's MYTHICALLY DELICIOUS. You got the detail on his wives, even! XD That's just great. And I just laugh because me and my friend Kat were dorking about this, and how Set is hot in it. Which, theoretically, he shouldn't be... but we can live with it, because it was nicely executed! Ah. Mythically delicious, yesss... :3

*laughs* Mythically delicious... that's great. XD
And yep, Set's got a pretty good-looking human form. Most of the time when I draw him, he's in modern times (except for lately; I seem to be on a "Let's explore the past!" kick with Set), so he's gotta have a human form. That, and I really am not an anthro artist.
I should draw my Egyptian boys in their other forms sometime, just for the practice...

Ahh~ Though I wasn't referring to anthro form, precisely-- not implying that's not how they were commonly portrayed, but myths (specially the latter ones) tended to describe Set as an ugly fellow (bla bla bla, smelly, bla bla bla, skin boils, bla bla bla stuff nobody wants to draw ANYWAY). That's why I said that it's one of those cases were applied bishiedom is a welcome thing. I kind of liked very much that you made his skin so pale, actually~ It's at least one way of making him stand out in how different he was to those other, "healthy tanned" gods. And exploring the past IS fun. XD Keep it up~

*snrks* Ah yes... that. As far as my Set goes, I tend to disregard a lot of what the later myths say about him, since most of that sprung up as a way to embellish his reputation as the Egyptian boogie man. I base him more off his earlier incarnation, the one the pharaohs Seti I and Ramesses II would have been associated with, where he was wild and dangerous, sure, but he wasn't the evil, despicable thing that went bump in the night that the myths depicted him as after the major rise in popularity of the whole Osiris/Horus story.
Not to mention he's got just as nice a body as most of the other gods in his statues and whatnot - no reason not to carry that to his human face.
*laughs* And the white skin (along with the red hair and eyes) comes straight out of mythology... which was kinda interesting, since the Egyptians considered white the color of purity and holiness. Poor guy's almost as pale as his kilt... maybe those later skin problems were from serious sunburn.
