Description OK so this is my preliminary sketch for my tattoo that I am going to get! I really would appreciate your feedback on a few things....

So the lower sketch is actually the original sketch. I showed it to some tattoo artists and they were all "lose the flowers! It's apples and oranges!" but I really want to use flowers as a motif to tie my tattoos together... plus, I thought they made it more unique!! So what are your thoughts?

So the upper sketch is actually the second sketch! I think the lines are a bit more solid, the shapes are more sound, and the detail level is more realistic (think I should simplify further?) but the flow isn't as good so I will do a 3rd drawing.

What do you guys think? Feedback highly appreciated!!

Hi, Thanks for asking before just using it. Are the t-shirts non-profit?

No problem, we just wanted to check with you first. Well, we'd be selling the shirts to raise money for our international project. It's for our Interact Club which is part of Interact District 5170 (interact5170.org -currently under construction) and it's a service based non-profit organization/club run by students. I'm part of Area 4, and each area creates a mascot and t-shirt to go along with it; hence, my requesting your permission for your design.

Hey, sorry but I don't permit my art to be used for items which are sold. I try to be consistent about this one. But good luck with your project!

Hey! This can be very strange question, but CAN I USE THIS AS A TATTOO? I've been trying to sketch a jellyfish tattoo, but I can't make a picture I want. And this is PERFECT. It's ok if you don't want to share this. Some changes are possible (because of the body part I'm getting the tattoo)

HI!!

Please go to my deviant art page as I got a tattoo modeled off of your second drawing about a year ago that I've been meaning to post in order for you to see it!

I apologize for stealing your photo! there are alot of terrible jellyfish tattoos out there and I initially did not know you had intended your drawing to be a tattoo for yourself!

I hope you are flattered maybe?

I like the tails in the first one. But the top area on the second one?
I kind of like the flowers, but I could see how it could be a bit too busy? I guess.

Yeah I got the jelly, still thinking about adding the flowers but not until I'm done school soon!

Exciting :3 I always wanted to get a small white realistic rabbit behind my ear.

Mm, if you like the flowers, you should get them? But it might be like one of those hair cutting things. You could get the jelly fish and if you decide you want the flowers later you cuold go back and get them done? Or draw it on your leg where you would get it. And try it?

kitton In reply to G33kLove [2010-02-16 22:22:57 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I am still debating them I do want them but if I want to do more sea-life inspired things it may be out of place then so we shall see!

I kind of want one of my goldfish tattooed on my neck behind my ear, but I also want some other things on my neck later so I dunno what to start with haha!

I guess it's a lengthily process to get everything that you want inked!

tattooists should NEVER ask you to remove parts of a design that you've created for yourself, because you obviously put the flowers in for a reason, so there should be no need for a tattooist to tell you it looks "bad" or whatnot, i love the idea of having flowers in it, it actually adds something more to it than just the jellyfish. i say add the flowers, and keep them, it adds an element of beauty to it i think

kitton In reply to kawaii-kitsune84 [2009-04-07 20:23:45 +0000 UTC]

I think I will add them at a later date. At first I will just get the jellyfish and then I will add the flowers later this summer

I haven't read all the replies so I may be revisiting the topic, but a tattoo artist may warn against having the lines of the tentacles too close together.
I really like the flow of the bottom jelly design. It has elements of movement that make it feel alive.

So this is what my tattoo artist told me. Your skin does expand, or at least since you're reproducing more skin cells the cells move and the ink lines will expand over time. I really love mine, they still look fresh.

I would search around the area you live in for tattoo artists, then ask around about him. I actually went to my artists website, and asked around. We have a medicore artist in town but I went off our 'island' here to one a town over. However my designs were drawn before hand, and I must say he got them on EXACTLY like the work on the paper I gave him. He did a bit more shading, and between the two I got I can tell now which he's better at.

I got a greenish angel wing on my right ankle and on my left a red demon/bat wing. The demon wing definitely look more detailed. I also was expecting a lighter color then the green I have, but I accept it.

Also, I'm not addicted! It actually cured me of wanting anymore cause I am a huge whimp. It will hurt, but you know it will, It was on my birthday as well so I actually ended up going to see a movie and sat with my legs up as they throbbed for a while. Are you gonna get it colored?

Hope you don't mind this comment XDD

D-Monica In reply to kitton [2009-03-10 20:23:24 +0000 UTC]

I hope I was at least a little helpful. The coloring is fun, just make sure your lines are to thin or close together! Thats why he brought up the point about the bleeidng, kinda, cause when you age the line will run into one big line with no negative space.

Oh cute! A jellyfish is very unique, I think you should do the second one, without flowers, that way, if you really feel you want the flowers, you can go back later and have them done.

The second design is good and simple enough where the tattoo artist can make their sketch and the transfer cleanly. My suggestion for finding a tattoo artist, go to local shops and look at each artist's book. They should all have one of their work. See how they do their lines and kind of compare the lines of your work to their, seeing how the artist work their magic. Is their hand heavy on the lines?

Sometimes with even simple design, a Tattoo artist can make the needle bite too far into the skin and it will make the lines too fat. That happened on one of mine. Do you want it colored? Thats a factor for a good artist too. How they do their colors and such.

Personally I like the one without flowers! But if it is something you love, you should keep them XD...
Perhaps in this particular sketch the flowers at really reminiscent of those hibiscus flowers seen in those springbreak-ish type airbrush things.. (screams cliche)

In any case, I bet it'll look amazing with color, but just as a side note, I know many people who started with linework and ended up not getting it colored in simply because it was really painful to sit through it. (Perhaps split the session in two if its unbearable) ... Have you also decided how big it would be? I know there are definitely varying degrees of tattoo professional skills, but often I see tattoo designs that are too delicate for the needle perhaps and come out less refined looking and it really loses alot of that original life.

I hope this turns out really well for you!!!

I like the lower one. The upper one has more solid lines, as you said, but I think it is also more... rigid -I don't really know how to explain it in English. Apart from that, the flowers are nice

Why a jellyfish?

BrightMask [2009-02-28 04:27:31 +0000 UTC]

i think you should keep the flowers...it's not like there's too many (only two with a few petals); i think the lower image is really beautiful and i really love the idea of a jellyfish
but beware of white! white fades out really fast! (mine faded out before the two week healing period was even up) But it may look fine with just your normal skin tone peaking out where there white should be...just something to keep in mind if you were planning on using white for the flowers. good luck with your tattoo! I know i can't wait get another myself

I like tatoos, but I'm always afraid of regreting them after, and the aging of the tatoo itself, most of the tatoos that I see on the streets are blurry, and I like clean lines, not black stains.

I think that may have a lot to do with climate or something, because I hear that a lot but where I live they seem to age really well! Plus, people here don't get that much sun (well, it IS canada haha!) and I think it's the lack of sun damage which keeps them fresh. I'm already really careful about my sunscreen as it is, so I think I'll be ok... plus my ankle isn't a place which gets hit with a lot of sun as it is!
