Been thinking about some next gen stuff again! Gonna be some small reworks from like........ the two things i posted before but i'm hoping to get a little further with it this time!! Gonna start out with Luna, since i've got a lot of ideas for her

For this next gen, we're set quite a few years into the future in which Celestia and Luna have stepped down and Twilight has taken the reigns of Equestria. HOWEVER, unlike Celestia, Luna had no desire to step down and only did so when she realized her current failing health would prevent her from leading productively. She stayed in Canterlot, and serves as an advisor to Twilight along with a few of her friends. While she fills her current role well, it's obvious to anyone who knows her she would have rather stayed on the throne.

This causes some issues between her and Twilight, due to two two of them having very different ideas on the "best" way to move forward without Celestia. Luna especially has dubious feelings about Twi's current "research" project.

She also doesn't herald the moon anymore. This is another thing that she relinquished to Twilight fairly recently, after a massive accident. If nothing else, she has kept her title even if she isn't the one in charge anymore.

1. For Luna's design I pulled a little bit more on the colorful side since I really like that about Celestia's design! Keeping true to the old style of Unicorns in the past, she allows her beard to grow out to what she considers a reasonable length. She never did understand why that fell out of style. Luna tends to keep her mane up and out of the way to the best of her ability, it's nebulous nature does prevent her from completely keeping it out of her face though.

To compensate for being unable to do her duties from before, she keeps herself busy with all the smaller paperwork tasks around the castle. More than Twilight, she meets with citizens of Equestria too see what's been happening. It's been quite some time since her return, and the citizens of Equestria do love Luna quite a bit these days. Many see her as the connection between the current royalty and the commonfolk even if it's unknown to them why she stepped down.

2. Alicorns (born or ascended) and other immensely powerful magical beings are susceptible to a magical diseased called Arcane Fragmentation Syndrome. This is latent in all powerful magic users, and there is no cure. Arcane Fragmentation Syndrome is as much of a physical disease as it is a mental one. It preys upon their magical essence, and amplifies their emotions. Once it becomes active within a creature, it can take years to recover. This is not a disease known to the general public.

In Luna's case, this transformed her into Nightmare Moon. Her extremely powerful magic led to what would have been a permanent full physical transformation. However, upon her return and being blasted by the Elements of Harmony a second time, she was half way reverted to how she used to be. This also led to the scar on her chest. In all likelyhood, she could have healed it with magic. But she chooses to leave it as is as a reminder to herself on her bad days.

Normally a creature would slowly recover from this disease through other means, returning them to normal after months or years of magical and mental training. The Elements sped this process up exponentially at a cost of Luna's magical stability. It remains unclear if this is something that she can eventually work through, or if she'll be this way the rest of her life.

Her symptoms come and go, most notable of them is her inability to safely or reliably use magic during these periods. The instability is showcased in her mane stained with a reddish color. Along with that, she often feels physically drained. Luna's flare up's make her irritable and she will go days without speaking to another pony while she feels this way. Luna's condition is exacerbated by her feelings about having to step down, The general public of Equestria is unaware of this, and thinks she stepped down of her own accord.

3. This one is just showcasing Luna's armor! She's the only one in the Canterlot royal family who bothers with it. It's one of the few things she's held strong too from the olden days of Equestria. When meeting with foreign leaders along with Twilight, she will always wear it. She believes it gives Equestria a strong image, even if Twilight disagrees with her antiquated nonsense.
