A part of our Heritage...Who would've thought I'd actually SHOW people these commercials?? *lovedtomakefunofthem*
[link]
ANOTHER TRUE STORY. We're helping 2 people from Australia who are chilling out in Canada, and we chat~ They told me this, and I couldn't believe it!
Its funny how its common knowledge amongst Canadians that maple syrup comes from maple trees..... its SO WEIRD to find people who don't know this fact!! (although a lot of the generic maple syrup is 98% sugar and water :/
the REAL stuff comes in cans and bottles and mostly from Quebec and is SO DELICIOUS on fresh snow. C'ESTMAGNIFIIIIQUE~~~.)
I had an identical convo with ~~ Except my outcome was threating nonsensical babbling :U
Seriously AMY! You can excuse Australians, but AMERICANS!? ffff. *adds to list*
THERE ARE SO MANY OUTCOMES FOR MATT. I DIDN'T KNOW WHICH ONE TO CHOOSE. So I can leave it to you guys and your imaginations...or something
Sorry for my craptastic colouring, but SAI tool is heaven for sketching and iiinking~

I'm more surprized about the fact that anyone in America didn't know that maple syrup came from trees.
Of course, I've never really been out of New England for any extended period of time, so I'm not sure on the proliferation of maple trees elsewhere in the US.

Angecornu In reply to Operation-Awesome [2009-08-07 23:18:09 +0000 UTC]
Even if there were maple trees in the US, they wouldn't be able to produce maple syrup because the weather is too warm. Maple trees need to freeze so they can produce maple water in spring, which prepares the arrival of seve in the tree. (seve and maple water are different stuff) Cold weather is needed for the production of maple products, not only maple trees.

yeah, i'm constantly surprised about what people don't know about Australia. I'm still asked (honest to god) if we all ride around on kangaroos and such...
you'd think people would realise that Kangaroos are NOT like horses, *aren't* domesticated, and we *do* infact have cars. I mean, we race in all those international races and such.
Sometimes i think people are just stupid (the skunk thing i can maybe understand, but you'd think there are some things which are just common sense).
But I guess if anyone can sympathise with our situation, it's Canada (I totally knew maple syrup was from trees...but i only discovered that a few years ago
)

KittyMira In reply to tigercub684 [2009-08-01 16:58:06 +0000 UTC]
Its interesting, isn't it??
I believe the whole kangaroo pouch gag came from cartoons, and whats funny is because its been around so long (ieugs Bunny) that its not surprising some people really do believe it; much like Looney Tunes Physics XD
I think the Simpsons did the best job at displaying this : After Bart and Homer try to use a Kangaroo pouch as a mode of transportation, their feet is covered in slime/mucus: "Eeeew... not like in the cartoons... "
Although its like any other stereotype I guess, people dumb/lazy enough to believe it without second guessing. Growing up, my mother used to laugh at the tourists who came up to Quebec in their big fur coats in the middle of summer because of the stereotype: CANADA= FROZEN THUNDRA.
But then again, some stereotypes are born out of small truths....XD;; *should stop philosophizing*

tigercub684 In reply to KittyMira [2009-08-03 08:18:01 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, it's actually really interesting, the way that countries can be so ignorant about others. But I guess that just comes from only living in your own country and being somewhat self-involved. I guess we're all like that in a way.
God, I HATE that Simpsons episode. It's so stupid. I mean, firstly, our toilets don't flush in circles, they just flush straight down! None of this "clockwise in the northern hemisphere thing", although that's a different case when say, you're draining a bath tub or something. And while they were correct in saying "it's not like in cartoons", kangaroos don't have slime in their pouches either. And the whole portrayal of our country as some kind of bogan out-back settlement where the prime minister floats around naked in a tube on a billabong, it's just so condescending.
You would think people would use common sense and realise it's a gross exaggeration (I mean, sure 70%+ is uninhabitable desert and scrub lands, but we certainly don't live out there!...for the most part).
I think I understand now how the French must feel with their whole stereotype as snobby, womanising wine drinkers who say things like "sacre blur" (or whatever it is). While I don't usually have an issue with stereotypes in general, some ones, especially concerning countries, can certainly get annoying. But in other cases, like you said with those tourists, they can be highly amusing (and the way I see it, if people are stupid enough to believe these stereotypes, they deserve to be mocked for them XD I'd love to see some of those Americans I met come to Australia and ask "so where do we get the kangaroo rides?")
Indeed, some stereotypes originate from some speckles of truth, but they are usually exaggerated so vastly that in the end, they barely resemble the idea behind them.
