Previous (Read this first!!)TW: Mentions of blood. Do not read if that makes you uncomfortable!
Ace of Diamonds slowly turned the door handle to his home and quietly stepped inside. It was around midnight, and he didn't want to wake his sleeping family. He had woken up in a dark alley surrounded in his own blood and in incredible pain. He was covered in deep scratches and bruised everywhere. He almost didn't remember what had happened.
But unfortunately the memory was all too difficult to forget.
Ace had run into his nemesis, Rezatone the dragon, in the crowded streets of Canterlot. Rezatone was the dragon that the sun princess Summer Equinox had chosen to be her suitor instead of Ace. Ace challenged the dragon to a duel in a back alleyway, and was miserably beaten. He was surprised he had woken up at all.
After limping miles in the dark back to his house, he had finally arrived. He didn't want his family to see him in his current state, because then he would have to face the shame of explaining to them how he picked a fight and lost.
Badly.
He slowly closed the door behind him, and looked around the house. All of the lights were off, and the house was almost unearthly quiet. He began to creep forward to the stair case, and set one hoof down on the first wooden step. It creaked loudly underneath his weight, and he winced, thinking that he would be caught for sure. After a moment, the only sound he heard was the loud drumming of his own heart. He let out a long sigh of relief.
He was in the clear.
As he lifted his other front leg to place on the next step, the lights flicked on, causing Ace to freeze where he stood. "I was worried when you didn't come home after your walk. I waited up for you." He heard a voice say somewhere behind him. He immediately recognized the voice to be his mother's, and she didn't not sound like her usual cheery self.
Unlike most would assume, Pinkie Pie was not a super lax and laid back parent. Although she gave her children many freedoms, there were also restrictions set in place that she expected them to follow (for their own safety of course). Ace stayed as still as a statue. "You know you have a curfew at 10. It's almost one. Where were you?" Ace swallowed hard, but didn't reply. "I know you can hear me Ace. Do you want to tell me where you've been?" Ace slowly turned his head to face his mother, revealing his bruised eye and scratched cheeks. "Not-Not exactly," He said with a slight laugh. Pinkie gasped at the sight, and suddenly noticed that Ace was covered in bruises and scratches all over his body.
"Oh my stars what happened to you??" Pinkie asked from her place on the couch, her front hooves slowly coming up to cover her mouth as she stared in horror. "I uh, got in a fight." Ace, stepped off the stairs and turned to face his mother completely, head bowing low in shame. "A fight??" Pinkie repeated in disbelief. "Who on earth would want to fight you??" She asked, getting up to investigate his wounds closer. The idea crossed Ace's mind to lie to his mother.
"Bandits." He said, a little too quickly. "Bandits?" Pinkie asked, pausing her investigation to look up at him. "Uh yeah, you know like ponies who just mug others randomly?" He said, hoping he got the definition of bandits right. "Why would anyone try to mug you? You had no valuables with you, you didn't even have a bag on you when you left." Ace wished his mother would stop asking questions. "I don't know, they just had a grudge against unicorns I guess." Ace shrugged, hoping that would end the conversation. "You mean it wasn't unicorns that did this? Then how did you get such deep scratches?" Ace felt his stomach drop. "Uh I don't know, I'm really tired so I should probably just head to bed or something.." Pinkie bowed her head to sniff at his scratches once more. "And in rows of three none the less. These look like claw marks." She looked up at Ace with an expression that was quickly changing from concern to anger. "The bandits were Abyssinian cats?" Ace offered. "Abyssinian cat scratches don't cut that deep." Pinkie said straight faced. "They had claw reinforcements?" Ace felt himself begin to sweat. "Why are you lying to me Ace? Won't you tell me what really happened?" Pinkie asked with big sad eyes. She rubbed her head against Ace's neck, a sign of affection, and Ace leaned his head against hers in return. He immediately felt bad for trying to lie to her, and felt comforted by her touch. She deserved to know the truth.
"I got into a fight with Rezatone." He sighed, feeling safe against his small mother. "You WHAT?!" She immediately backed away from him, and stared at him with a mixture of disbelief and anger. The compassionate and understanding mother that had comforted Ace just two seconds ago was gone. Ace scolded himself in his head for falling into her trap. "Rezatone the dragon?!" She nearly screamed. Ace felt sick to his stomach. He didn't have to reply for his mother to know that she was right. She sighed and shook her head. "Come on. Let's go get you cleaned up." She angrily made her way up the stairs with Ace following solemnly.
They made their way into the bathroom and Ace plopped down next to the counter in both sadness and exhaustion. Pinkie angrily opened the medicine cabinet and searched for the supplies she needed. She took out a box of bandaids, cotton balls, and a bottle of rubbing alcohol. She began to pour some rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball in angry silence.
"Well.. aren't you going to say something?" Ace asked hesitantly. She stopped and sighed, shaking her head. "What do you want me to say Ace?" She looked at him in defeat. "I don't know, I thought maybe-" "I mean, you got into a fight with a dragon, Ace, a dragon! Look how bad off you are! You're lucky that this is all he did, you could've-" She took a deep breath and turned away for a moment, seemingly recomposing herself. Ace was hit with a wave of guilt. He didn't mean to hurt his mother this way, he didn't realize how his actions could have an affect on others. He bowed his head in shame, staring at his hooves.
"And for a girl none the less!" Pinkie seemed to have returned to her angry self. She placed the cotton ball soaked in rubbing alcohol on Ace's scratched cheek, causing him to wince at the sting it caused. "She wasn't just a girl, mom. She was.. everything. I loved her." Pinkie felt her anger melt away when she saw how hurt her son looked, not just physically, but also emotionally. Her heart hurt for him. She knew all too well what he was feeling. She placed the used cotton ball on the counter and sighed. "I'm sorry, Ace, I didn't mean it like that." She opened a bandaid and placed it on his cheek. "I know what it's like to love someone, only for them to choose something else over you." For a second, Ace was confused about what his mother was talking about. How would she knew what he felt? Then he remembered his older sister, Neon Fritz. Neon and Ace were half siblings. His mother must be talking about Neon's father.
"But the truth is.." She continued, "If they truly loved you.. there wouldn't be choice."
Ace sighed.
Her words hurt, but deep down, he knew she was right.
She got another soaked cotton ball and began to dab at the scratches on his shoulders and sides. "When we love someone, we take a chance. We love them despite knowing that it may hurt us in the end. That takes courage." She began to open up a few bandaids, and placed them on each of Ace's many scratches.
"And, even if we hurt in the end, it's because we truly cared for that pony. It's ok to feel sad at first, but it's important to know that, it's not the end. If someone could love you before, someone can love you again. I know I do." She planted a kiss on Ace's cheek. "There, all better." She said with a smile, the first genuine smile Ace had seen her make all night. "Thanks mom." Ace smiled back, pulling her into a tight hug. "You're welcome son. I know things look bad right now, but.. have hope that it'll get better." The two sat there hugging for what seemed like hours. But neither wanted to let go. In the silence of the night, Ace's shoulders began to shake, as he allowed the pain to flow through him, and allowed the tears to finally fall.

Kind of a simple background but it’s ok I guess? I discovered textured brushes thanks to a friend and MY WORLD IS ROCKED. I’ll definitely be utilizing those more often. The sketch itself is kind of old (like two years oof) but I still like it so here it is!!
