Description
Sunset At The Old TreeOne of my biggest influences in art, without question, is English romantic landscape master painter J.W. Turner I discovered him while studying at art college, and I fell in love with his work. When the traveling Great Masters of Art show landed in Denver at the museum, I almost slept out for tickets, knowing that among Rubens and Van Dyck, Turners work would be there. There is nothing like seeing Turners work in person, nothing. It is simply stunning and inspiring and very motivational.
So, I suppose without question that you could certainly say that whole shot was inspired by him. I wanted a shot that would really reflect the influence he has had on me as an artist and as a photographer specifically. My painting style goes without question, but trying to capture a photograph in teh same style as a master landscape painter is a different beast entirely.
Did I succeed? You be the judge.
About the photograph itself:
Captured on the northern Colorado plains on an old country road, the old tree, though long and dead, seems to almost still hold some life as the sky paints the end of the day slowly falling behind the Colorado Rockies.
Processed in Lightroom, Dynamic Photo HDR and final output through Photoshop.
I hope you all like it!
John

He is a great painter and I think the mood and colors in your photo make it reminiscent of his artwork.

Very emotive and powerful piece. The contrast of the brooding clouds and warm sunset colors is stunning. The clouds remind me of Turner's "Fishermen At Sea," and the light reminds me of the light in "The Fighting Temeraire"...especially that yellow part at the top. That fence leading to the silhouette of the tree completes the balance to the composition very well. The distant mountains are a great added touch! I am not sure how well an art critic would say you captured his style, but the influence is easily seen. As always, gorgeous piece of work!

Really nice, John. Very different from most of your "usual" if there is such a thing. I like the combination of the warm pinks and the moody grays. That does seem a little like Turner.

I can't really say whether this is akin to one of Turners paintings, but I know I like it.I was instantly drawn to it as the thumbnail popped up onto my screen.I must say I didn't immediately recognize it as one of yours, which is good, isn't it?

I certainly does look like a painting, although maybe not quite a JW Turner, since the details are still pretty distinct in this (and his work does tend to be a bit detail-less, I find, though he's still a good painter)

I feel you've succeeded in what you tried to do John . Having also seen his work in person, I completely know what you mean when you say how moving it is. If you've ever been to Boston, the Museum of Fine Art has an incredibly large collection of Turner's work. Along with famous ones like Slave Ship and Fall of the Rhine. Also, although they're not always on view, they even have a few of his pencil drawn landscapes. If you're ever going to be in the Massachusetts area, and since you're a big fan of JMW Turner, I highly recommend the MFA
.

Think you captured the style well, John. That almost monotone brown, with the light bleeding into it. I think old Will won't be turning in his grave. He'll give it a
