3 things in one. The story is based off a plot point in Legend of Zelda Majora's Mask, it's written like an episode of Aosth, and Carol's having a hundred eggs is because Betta Fish tend to have 100 to 500 eggs at once.

Sonic and Tails went to the see the beautiful Carol Reef when they noticed a Betta walking on sure. Sonic and Tails thought something was off when Carol was as big as Robotnik's belly. Carol told the duo that Dr. Robotnik has a beach in the mountain of the Carol Reef and that Scratch and Grounder kidnap her husband, Razor and a few of the Fish creatures, and the worse part is Carol is about to lay her eggs in time for the festival. With no time to waste, Sonic agreed to invade Robotnik's sea fortress to retiree her husband and her people from big, round, and smelly and his two coconut fruit mates, but not before the hedgehog asked how many babies whom dad he's rescuing for and the answer made shock you, it's shocking Tails at least.

I actually picture in a better universe that instead of the fish people being like the Echidnas, they be more like the Zoras from the Zelda series.
