Eighty-Eight didn’t notice the shortage of food right away- they never needed to eat as much as the others, being smaller than most. What they DID notice was the excessive whispering that had begun to take over most conversation. They hadn’t seen mother or father in a while either… although maybe that was because the wynglings had been more careful not to cause any trouble? Aunt M still let Leo read to her, but she was acting strange too… Leo didn’t know, all they knew was that things felt WEIRD.

They were given a glimpse at the bigger picture though, when one of their peers- an older gro named Ten- had checked up on Eighty-Eight one night after a short hushed dinner. She quietly had asked if Leo had stocked up on provisions. When given a shake of the head and a quizzical look, Ten had explained to Leo what some of the others had been whispering about- escape.

The word rung in Eighty-Eights head, surprise and anxiety and disbelief washed through them as Ten handed them a sack which contained a few cans of food. Where would they go? It’s dangerous out there! Is that where Zero and Thorfinn went? What about the sickness and the spites?

But, with the fear also came a quieter, hopeful line of thought. Would we be happy?

The manor and the people in it were all that Leo had ever known- but the books that Leo read spoke of a larger world, filled with wind and magic, of wyngrew that wore smiles and of families that were happy- nothing like the dark, hushed manor that Leo called home. Nothing like the gros that Leo and their peers called “mother” and “father”.

Nodding to Ten, Leo took the sack of food and shelved it behind their stack of books. As long as everyone stuck together, Leo was sure that they would be okay.
