Personality:

entj - the commander * 8w9

  • grumpy | moody | insensitive | rude | stubborn | snide

= strong-willed | good-humored

  • Protective | reliable | passionate | trustworthy

Foolhardy, calm now that he’s older but tends to take jokes too far. Very emotionally closed-off, and cannot handle emotions or heart-to-hearts well (or at all. He’d rather brawl it out). He is a trustworthy man despite being a pirate, and has grown in his responsibilities to his region very well. He distrusts outsiders greatly, and tends to hold bad assumptions of people regardless of his first impression of them. He has a bad temper, and gets pissed off pretty easily. He isn’t one to skirt around issues, and comes off as crass due to that. He prides himself in his region and house, so the betrayal of the throne to his own house is still very close to his heart. As such, he despises the queen and doesn’t deny it. He is stern, and tends to resort to violence with any problem he faces. Basically an old scallywag. Once you earn his trust, however, you have a friend fiend for life.

History:

James Morgan was destined to greatness since birth. Well, if being the chief of Portsea was supposed to be great.

House Morgan has been holding the position of chief in the small region since its inception, and despite being a mainly ruthless, backwater place full of savage pirates and raging storms, the non-orthodox methods of the region have come full circle in regards to appointing a leader. As such, whenever the prior chief of Portsea steps down, whether of their own volition or not, people nominate themselves to a brawl that would have the new chief emerge victorious from.

The position of a chief isn’t much wanted, so the nominations every year are usually a manageable amount. James never had a say in this, he was born the eldest of siblings and knew he had to train all his life to win the seat after his grandmother resigned. His own father denied nominating himself, sworn to a life of piracy. He died out sea when James was 15. James had felt upset of course, and started sailing the ocean in his honor, all-while knowing his current responsibilities lay elsewhere. He knew a lot rested on his shoulders.

James would train in both sailing and in fights during the coming years. He had always been a hardy man since birth, stern in his childhood, with a mean streak. He trained more than his other siblings, 2 of them to be exact, who he would beat every single time they would brawl. The pressure piled on, so he took to brawling in the streets as well, starting up fights in bars for no reason. His propensity for having a drink too many hadn’t helped it in the least. He gained a notorious reputation on top of the one he originally had: grandson of the chief, the next in a long line of Morgans to be chief.

James started going blind by the age of 20, due to a form of glaucoma. Considered to be a slow moving disease, Morgan would find he was unaware of its development until it was too late for any medical intervention to prevent it.

During his twenties, James gained a stronger reputation of being a pirate himself. He originally worked with a crew on the Vendetta who had their own captain, (later they’d become his own crew) and they sailed across the open seas, causing huge misfortune to the islands nearby. Unbeknownst to him, his declining vision caused him huge slips during his run, with usually easy plundering turning into disasters. Despite these mistakes, James proved himself to be as trustworthy as a pirate could be, and was able to get himself out of pinches in no time. That built trust in the crew, as any sailor could make mistakes, but only the best could get out of them.

When James turned 30, his grandmother died. It was time for James to step up to the position.

Barely anyone nominated themselves that year, they knew his background, and despite a minority in the region, Portsea prefered their chief to be one that was known to be tough. The pirates also backed him up, and James himself was able to beat the contenders anyway. A few years into his reign, James’ vision in his left eye had completely left him. That’s when he realized he had a problem.

With his declining vision, Morgan relied more on the bottle in his hand, his own personal problems had caused him to slack off on his chief responsibilities. His answer to most issues was to sloppily plunder the seas for more gold. Pirates were thriving, this was ideal for them. The people of Portsea, however, were not. Gone were the days of the Morgans’ firm but fair ruling, and the political climate became shakier. Someone needed to nominate themselves for the position, and gain it back from a now-bumbling pirate.

Rumors of overthrowing James were known to him, but he didn't think anyone had the gall to go against him, he took it as a challenge, even, he worked hard for this role, he deserved it. He deserved it.

James’ sister nominated herself that next year. Shaken by the fact his own sister would go against him, his own family, and news of him having a daughter he didn’t know of cropping up, as well as his blindness creeping into his right eye by now surely spelled out him losing his seat of power. And he did.

Ashamed, at the lowest of lows, after drinking his heart out in a bar and injuring a certain Naval Officer, William Seaward (James doesn’t recall this). James set off to sea, threatening his motley crew to go with him to the open sea. Loyal to a fault, and scared, they would’ve come despite the threats, but James was not in his right mind that night. So they approached the forbidden border.

Disaster occurred, of course, and the last thing James heard before getting knocked out by the crashing ship were the yells of his crew.

He woke up to an island, a sea hawk squawked near him. He relied on it to navigate the place. It was one of the islands he’d plundered before, but they helped him get back into shape. He remained there for a year or so, adopting the bird and getting his head in-check. There was a fellow blind person on the island who had helped him adjust to his newfound situation. James felt ashamed like no other. He would set things straight. He would come back to Portsea and claim back his position. He would repay the crew that died out in the border. He would go back to where he was meant to be.

His return surprised the region, who thought he was dead. He challenged his sister and won, clear-headed and back to his initial hardiness. His sister realized something changed in him, and accepted her loss with grace.

It’s been 12 years since he won his seat back, and Morgan has risen mostly back into his region’s “good” graces, (as well as returned to pirating activities with his newfound seahawk guide) but with the closing of the borders, especially to a region that relies on the sea, tensions have come back on the rise.

Likes/Dislikes:

  • the sea, sailing, gold, his bird, his daughter, his sword, poking people’s eyes out, drinking

  • newharbour, silver, dragons, the crown, being grounded, people underestimating him, the linear progression of time

Extra:

-He’s come to love his daughter despite his initial denial of her existence, but she understandably despises him. He has attempted to connect with her multiple times in his later years but she ignores him. He hasn’t been there for her in the past, he won’t be there for her now. He isn’t as trying as much as he claims either.

-Morgan has forbidden anyone from pillaging the island that helped him out with no explanation as to why. Frankly, no one knows what happened to James, and there are a lot of theories by Portsea’s population on how he survived the year he disappeared. None of them are as simple as what actually happened and theories range from actual magic to him being taken by dragons to Roosthall. He leans into those ridiculous legends sometimes.

-Do not hurt his bird or he’ll straight up kill you.

-Has a booming, strong voice.

-The hair tie in his hair was made off thread from his daughter’s blanket when she was a baby. She made the seashell necklace for him when she was young too, and he wears it with pride now.

-Speaking of his daughter, the mother was someone he had a fling with back when he was younger. They would share some greetings if they meet up on the street but otherwise there isn’t much of a connection. They aren’t on bad terms, however, and he has provided money to support the both of them and their fish shop. Mainly out of obligation.

-His relationship with his siblings has never been good, but he does hold a certain respect for his sister, as she does with him. After stepping down, she now works to regulate the docks and the lighthouse itself, closer to the people. His brother went off to the Emberlands in pursuit of dragons. (Yeah they both washed their hands off him a long time ago for “allying” with the Queen).
