Description

Since moving to NY at the end of July, I've been a bit of a recluse, so over the weekend I decided to change that since Grand Flats Nature Trail is but a scant 4-5 minute drive, no thanks to Google Maps... I discovered two things. The first is that it's incredibly easy to get to, off a main road, but feels very "nature immersive(?)" within about 20 yards. Of course, it might have helped that at 9am, no one was out.

The second thing? Bug spray. Lots and lots of bug spray. I went in un-sprayed and discovered, repeatedly, that stopping was a good way to become an all-you-can-eat affair for around a zillion mosquitos, which is not ideal when trying to photograph things. Fun fact -- mosquitos do not respond to yelling. Even with emphatic, terse language.

This is a Jewelweed. I had to look it up. Apparently, it's also known as 'Kicking-colt.' I will assume there's some sort of story, there, because that seems like a violent name for a flower...
