Description
Here's the DECAP-R (Designated Elite Combat Armor-Piercing Rifle). Or Decapre, to those who know herThe Sniper Rifle was originally designed and modeled by Matt Pugnetti , who also designed and modeled the Sub-machine gun and Machine gun for the mod. He also basically the equivalent of Lead Designer and a good friend of the project lead. He was not entirely happy with his rifle, and I took a crack at it so he could move on to designing other elements. (Incidentally, his design vaguely resembled a RAMO M650)
(Jargon sticklers: yes, it's an anti-material rifle, not exactly a sniper rifle, but I will refer to it as such out of convenience)
One thing that was required by the project lead was that the scope would some how connect to a socket on the player's helmet/face. Originally, there was going to be a cable/wire and the player would simply pick it up and manually attach it to his/her face. Since there were problems with importing animations (which in fact, were never resolved), I came up with a more jointed/mechanical solution.
The only thing I kept from Matt's model was the bullet round, which I think was supposed to be a .50 cal round, but never specified.
The Barret line of rifles are a definite inspiration. I can't remember where the triangle cross-section idea came from, although I think it was actually more of an X, before it was simplified down. The part I like was that the bipod and the ammo would be between this upside-down "Y" and rather convenient. Accuracy Internationals AS50 provided a source for those kind of "prongs" that extend out from the frame. Those long grooves on the side of the receiver/frame were more for just visual appeal, but I wrote it off as a kind of reverse picatinny rail if necessary.
The rifle is bolt-action, which I think is more a gameplay decision to limit rate of fire. For a time, though, it was going to be semi-auto with a reciprocating/recoiling barrel.
This does start to mark where my references start to get a little vague since I can't have a physical analog (aka airsoft or even the real steel) -- at least not any within my price range. As such, the bullpup bolt-action configuration is a bit of guess work on my part from looking at pictures of a Barret M95.
Maya (originally in 6.5, has since gone through 7, and now 8). Default Lambert texture. Rendered with Mental Ray and Final Gather.
(notes lack of trigger . . . . I must be getting tired . . .)
Fullview is 1024x.
Download for 2000x.

That's awesome...I am modeling a Savage 110 BA sniper for my character on Maya. Could you give me some tips for the side of the rifle? Or any other tips that will help me

Sadly, the mod quietly died and went to that place where ever dead mods go.

Thats a shame...But you say mod, mod for what engine?

That would have been nice if it went through, there are many mods but few good ones, counterstrike and such. I already played through all the games that use source engine v.v half life 2, sin episodes, might and magic, chronicals of choribal or whatever, I was dissapointed, if someone could come up with a good FPS with even better RPG elements I'd be happy...And dont mention oblivion, it blows, just another broken game, pour morrowind, its legacy dies here...Rant, rant, rabble, rabble.. Im sorry it didnt work out for you all, I hope one day you get to continue.

You say this is a .50 caliber sniper rifle?Guess I could use a little knowledge of mine here ;D
Well, those calibers for rifle use are .50 BMG rounds, also known as the anti-aircraft rounds.Stands for Browning Machine Gun(sounds strange,no?).During the WW2,they were used in AA guns, like Flak Guns(not 88mm one, mind you ) for example.Today, they are used in anti material rifles like M82(made by Barret) and AW50(by Accuracy International). These rounds are some of the longest rifle bullet I ever see,so if you come across a rifle round longer than .300(or more) rounds, that's the one.And it's extremely sharp, too.
A shot of the round:[link]
The one on the left is the one.Its size are quite large,so it's hard to miss it.

. . . And?
the round was already modeled by another designer before he changed focus to other assignments, which by its approximate proportions definitely larger than either .556 or 7.62. It's actual caliber was never specified.

I hope that the scope's digital screen would be extremely high-resolution for it's size then (probably, as it's a futuristic-type weapon... or is it?) Bolt-action is the way to go, for when it's accuracy you want, look no further (though the AS50 is still a nice rifle). Good job on this, we'll just pretend the trigger's there I like the flash suppressor idea of having two rings for the bullet to pass through and the excess gas to disperse at.
because of the nice design.

Cool thanks.
Since the scope [supposedly] interfaces with the character's helmet/face plate, it would be at whatever the guy's hud is. Couldn't believe prey did almost exactly the same thing -- although this rifle would be more comfortable than grabbing your eyeball.

Oh, using a HUD instead, I get it. I thought it was just a digital display. Guns that do that are really cool, but they need to forget integrating the M16 with the Land Warrior system and use the XM29 or possibly make this [link] gun instead. It's from a Bond movie and actually just some gun that uses Uzi rounds instead of the enormous clip in the rear, but it'd still be cool.

this has a killer side profile, the only elements design wise that catch my eye in the wrong way is the scope. i really love the idea for it, but the mechanical area that is animated is too simplistic, or rather, too out of place in my opinion. the flat top joint really throws away my belief that this is a real weapon.
i admire how you stayed away from the AVP2 sniper rifle design, but can't help but wonder if the fold out animation is worth it. i agree (i think) that the best option would be to have a "plug in" animation, but since that is apparently out of the question, im wondering why the scope isn't in a permanently extended position.
i don't really wanna dog this down with hyper realism, i just think that a lot of the optical power of that scope would be lost if half of its length is taken up with folding optics and mirrors.
anyhoo, thats my five cents! im really glad you put so much time into the model and the description you gave... sure beats the "..." that some people give

Thanks -- and good point about the scope.
I think I wrote it off as that it becomes a digital signal tranfered electronically through those joints (based on a Camcorder eyepiece).
