At last, Elneri shuts her eyes closed but she’s slipping away still. Her head spins in a bout of panic-induced faintness. It is all on the brink now, clawing through the protective thin layer of repression, ready to flood her once again.
She can almost hear and feel and see it all again even if she shouldn’t let herself fall for it every time.
No, she tells herself.
She can’t even succumb to the urge to run back to the laboratory, numb and engorge herself with some more blood. She holds onto the blanket instead, mad as she was back then, trying to push back inside the mounting pressure of fear.

She fights, even if she knows it’s easier when she lets the bitter remembrances occur without futile resistance.

What is she thinking? That she can leave behind all of that? Past is never past, past always is and never was. It will be like this forever: she can’t fix herself, nor anyone else can, not even Feran who fixed her in every other way.
