How can your heart be black if it's also gold? Is it dirty? What does that mean, symbolically? A heart of gold means kindness, so would a tarnished golden heart represent the innate selfishness of human kindness? And you know what, this rambling reminds me of that Penny Arcade comic in which Tycho muses upon the deeper meaning of the phrase "what is delicious" before Gabe goes "oh I remember! It's candy. Candy is delicious."
