I made this evolution line kind of on a whim. At my current place of work the PR guy asked me if I had an idea for a shirt for our company and I kind of put it out of mind. Later on, I remembered he had asked when it got slow so I ended up trying to make an idea involving a Unicorn shooting a laser out of its horn(since we utilize a lot of lasers at my work). I did this fully knowing the idea would not be accepted by the boss man, but that aside I ended up doing a lot of practice doodles of horses. After I had worked on the shirt idea I was just doodling some more horses and I decided why not make a horse Pokemon as well while I'm at it. I went in with the thought of making a grass-type Pokemon that was more of an Okapi but as the idea evolved I thought the seaweed look for the hair was too cool I ended up going the direction it is now. Seaweed also is a really good match for the Grass/Water-type which I think is a really cool Pokemon typing.

The idea itself isn't fully original, I've seen plenty of people do a Fakemon based on the Kelpie, which a mythological seaweed horse that has a bit more of a horror aspect than what I did. I decided to go more fantasy and added the unicorn bit to make it more fun.

I gave the Kelpicorn line two abilities that I think make it a really cool and unique Pokemon in practice: Lightning Rod & Chlorophyl. Lightning Rod give a nice Electric immunity, which is always nice for a Water-type despite the grass type evening that out, but it makes this Pokemon a really nice pivot with the added immunity and general resistances of Water and Grass. Chlorophyl I think is a really funny ability because it makes it have double speed in the sun, so it would be a Water-type that could be used on a sun team, which is irregular, but also viable on a rain team.
