The original Digimon series was somewhat interesting, back then a lot of people often compared it to Pokemon as both are so similar to each other and so the Pokemon vs Digimon wars began. But this war was short lived as Digimon began to decline as they stop making the series and goodies and so it appears that Pokemon won the war. Still, Digimon was different I say.

IMO, if it wasn't for the RPG-style of videogames, a fact clearly displayed with the ultra-successful launch of the Black/White version, PokΓ©mon would've also become less popular (fine let's include the trading cards, whatever).
Obvious comparisons aside, Digimon was just plain different. Every season introduced a new batch of characters while PokΓ©mon kept going almost nonstop with the same cast and new episode released. Digimon fans had to wait IIRC. PokΓ©mon fans didn't have to get used to new heroes as often as the Digimon fans, resulting in a much bigger hit-or-miss scenario.
How can a show survive for so long with the same formula and the ever increasing number of ridiculous characters, both human and PokΓ©mon alike (the same goes for Power Rangers) is mind-boggling in an industry as cutthroat as the entertainment industry, especially with today's easily-jaded and think-they're-adults viewers. (Yeah, they'll always be a new batch of kids to replace the all-grown-up ones, but if that's the case, many other shows would still be around. Guess they're too many variables in that industry.)
