Description
Orbital Station One has a colorful history, while a station was planned to be built at the colony to help with traffic coming from Earth, this station was never meant to be built as is. During transit of parts to the colony, one of the CPS Ships suffered a core meltdown. While it was able to safely eject the core before it could explode, the ship suffered major damage to its systems in the process. With no electricity to power the deflection disk and no ability to maneuver the ship with its thrusters, the CPS ship suffered in credible damage from the onslaught of shrapnel hurled at it by the exploding reactor.
Luckily there were other ships in the vicinity to assist in evacuating the survivors of this tragedy, but the colony lost 73 people to the incident, including all but 5 of the crew manning the ship.
It was decided that, instead of letting the ship drift or crash it would be salvaged as much as possible, and integrated with the parts brought in intended to be used for the station that was in the planning stages.
The top of the deflection disk was removed from the old ship and new skeletal struts were added to attach radiators and thruster assemblies. These thrusters were newer models, that were smaller than the originals on the CPS and had higher fuel efficiency while reducing heat when fired up. A new fusion core was also added, meant to be used as a secondary core if the first one went into meltdown.
A larger ring had been towed in (in pieces that connected together), and was used to replace the original ring that was beyond repair. This new ring housed station personnel rooms, lounge and recreational space, as well as food production area's and a medical ward.
The ring below the new ring was much less damaged and repaired to be a primary food production and waste management ring.
The docking ports and attached modules we're designed for the new station and had been brought in on a previous supply run and were attached immediately so that crews didn't have to rely on EVA runs and remote robotic assembly like that had been.
The two rings below the docking area were re-purposed to be lab rings, running experiments on plants from Earth, the Colony and micro-organisms found throughout the solar system. These labs were deemed fundamental for human integration into the new ecosystems they were being exposed to.
Near the ventral section of the station is a hap-hazard assembly of cables and power conduits connecting the station to the Primary Fusion Core. This assembly is protected by a hardened outer casing that exists in a vacuum. Around the outer edges there are more skeletal struts built on to attach old CPS fuel pods to the station to allow for greater maneuvering and control.
At the very bottom of the station is the Fusion Core Module where all primary power is generated, with a piece of the old deflection disk welded to the bottom with a satellite affixed to it. The disk allows radiation and heat from the thrusters to be a non-issue for ground-to-space communications.
Once the station was complete, it needed a name. The new crew, chose the name disarray. It felt appropriate that the station, hobbled together from mostly spare parts, should have a name that reflected its character. Orbital One officially went online in 2159.
