Description
The CL-H22 (Central Logistics Heavy Rifle Model 22), originally known as Project Sidewinder, is an experimental heavy assault rifle meant for long range engagements and was part of the Futuristic Combat Rifle of 2022 program. The original design was drawn up in the United States and production began in Eastern Asia, especially in South Korea and Japan. As a participating member of the Futuristic Combat Rifle of 2022 program development phase, Central Logistics was asked to develop a new rifle for universal civilian and military use. The rifle they had come up with was originally entitled as Project Sidewinder. Not many details were revealed about this 'Project Sidewinder', except the fact that this rifle would be a heavy assault rifle, with the definition and implied meaning of heavy unclear, but many speculations about the specifications were made based off this revelation alone. In order to strengthen the project, Central Logistics devised a funding plan in which $35,000,000 USD was donated in order to boost and support Project Sidewinder. This inferred that CL was holding nothing back at this experimental weapon. New specifications for their prototypes were released in late August 2021, and revealed the barrel length to be an astonishing 7" at length.
Shortly after that released specification, Project Sidewinder's true and final form was being finalized. It wasn't until 3 months later that a worldwide reveal for the H22 was made. To test this new developmental rifle of theirs, CL launched a flagship prototype version (CL PPS22), which was a near-exact replica to the final CL H22 product. Only one primary version of the CL-H22 was formulated and that was the H-22, which chambered standard 5.56x45mm NATO rounds in 30 round magazines. Similarly to the 381, another rifle that CL made in the decades of the 2020s, only one rifle barrel length was included, marked at only 7". Project Sidewinder eventually was renamed as the CL-H22, however no tenders were being accepted at the moment due to some experimental tweaks Central Logistics wanted to perfect. CL, who believed that this rifle would ensure great success like it's other weapons, then presented the weapon publicly as part of their worldwide reveal. It wasn't until three months later however, that tenders and requests for the H-22 would finally be accepted.
Central Logistics, in order to pass through the upcoming gun competition of 2022 to see which gun is superior, submitted a 30-round 5.56 mm rifle (CL PPS221), as well as an experimental version chambered in .308 Winchester (CL PPS220). The .308 system was discontinued due to caliber issues and gun problems, leaving only the CL PPS221. When the order requests were released, only a staggering amount of 8 weapons were submitted, but were reduced to just the CL H22 and HK 418. The H22, after a hard decision by the judges, ultimately won the overall contest, and orders were officially made for this gun.
Sometime near December 21, 2021, CL-H22s were sent to those who ordered it, be it law enforcement or any other agency, which included an order for ~1,561 H22 rifles on the first day.
The CL-H22 assault rifle is a combative, single caliber design, with an orange carbon-aluminum blended alloy upper receiver and polymer lower receiver / fire control unit. The weapon is gas-operated and features a rotating bolt and a manual gas regulator for automatic fire. The fire control unit includes ambidextrous safety/fire selector switches which can be found on both sides, which permits semi-automatic, 3-round burst fire and full automatic fire, all at the flick of the switch. The charging handle is on the right side only, making it less ambidextrous for those both left and right handed. Magpul created variants of their PMAG magazine systems, in which the magazine sports the traditional CL ring for easier magazine ejection. This ring has no effect in magazine size however as always.
