You walk down the stone tunnel. When you emerge at the end, you find yourself standing in the open air of the center of the labyrinth. The sky above is streaked on one side with the colors of the sunset, and on the other, the flickering orange of flames. Looming in front of you is the mountain that houses Aippaq’s Shrine. Carved into the mountain is a passageway, either side of it flanked by the towering statue of a tokota carved with blue-green runes.
You cautiously move forward, when you suddenly hear something behind you. You whirl around to find yourself staring into the flaming eyes of Meelanik. The spirit is larger than you expected, towering over you. His double set of jaws, studded with blackened teeth, clack and grind together as he regards you with a piercing stare. His sides heave and strain as something inside his body tries to force its way out, but he seems not to notice.
His attention snaps onto your lantern, and he finally speaks, several layered voices spilling from his jaws, "Finally you arrive with my spirit. Hand it over now, tokota, and you will receive your reward."
To your surprise, another spirit jumps between you and Meelanik. She is much smaller, but she fixes the Devourer with an unwavering stare, her body tensed in an aggressive stance.
"Shut your mouths, all of them! That spirit is mine, it needs to rest with Aippaq, not in your bloated belly!" Sikrinerk shouts.
Meelanik’s jaws grimace, but his reply sounds more bored than angry, "Foolish anklebiter!"
"Oversized toaster!"
"Endless thorn in my side…" Meelanik growls, "You foolishly believe in the goodness of all tokotas? Then let this one choose for itself who it wants to serve. You, or me."
Sikrinerk considers this proposal for a moment before she finally relaxes, turning her attention to you. Her gaze is hopeful as she address you, "Very well. What says you, tokota? Do you wish to condemn this spirit to be the fat one’s meal, or will you allow me to guide it to eternal rest?"
You look down to your lantern. The spirit inside is silent, but trembling with fear. It looks up at you with a pleading expression, placing it’s two forepaws gently against the glass.
The time has come to make your final decision. Both Meelanik and Sikrinerk watch you with anticipation, but the two spirits will not wait for long. Do you surrender the spirit to one of them in exchange for the gifts they have offered, or reject them both and proceed into Aippaq’s Shrine?
After Freddy seems to be scared of both of the Spirits, Polarstern decide to proceed her way into the shrine.
"Don't worry little one. I won't let them make you scare." She said with soft, warm voice. Her mother instinct would never let her do something like offering the little guy.
➤ Refuse both spirits and proceed into the shrine
One look at the pleading face of the lonely spirit solidifies your choice. You refuse to hand it over to either Sikrinerk or Meelanik.
Neither spirit is happy with your decision - you can feel the anger rolling off of both of them. But it is Meelanik who attacks first.
"Insolent tokota!" he bellows angrily, each of his voices laced with more fury than the last, "If you refuse to give me what’s mine, I will take it!"
You are frozen in place as he charges towards you. Luckily for you, however, Sikrinerk leaps to action. In a flash, she sinks her teeth into Meelanik’s hind leg. Despite her small size, the force of her bite is able to drag Meelanik down to the ground. You leap out of the way as the two spirits collide, skidding towards you. In the ensuing moments, you do your best to stay out of their way as they fight viciously.
You briefly consider darting into the shrine, but this plan is quickly abandoned as Meelanik kicks Sikrinerk off his ankle and sends her flying into one of the statues at the entrance. The force of her body slamming into the statue causes it to shatter into enormous pieces, and the veritable boulders rain down in front of the shrine’s entrance, blocking it off completely. Several smaller pieces of rock explode from the impact site like shrapnel. One of the pieces finds its mark on the lantern, shattering the glass and freeing the Lonely Spirit. With a howl of fear, it floats out from the broken glass and buries its face in your fur.
Sikrinerk appears to be no worse for wear as she springs up from the rubble, her body blazing with light. She launches another attack at the Devourer. All the while, the storm above intensifies, flames and the blazing sunset descending on the area and shaking the ground with the booming notes of thunder.
You watch helplessly as the spirits fight. You are not certain who will win, but you know that whoever does may be the one that decides your own fate.
