Description “Let’s see…Log In…enter my password…come on, load already!”

Charlotte Little was sitting at home. She wished she knew how slow the internet speeds would be before she moved in, but nothing she can do about that now. At least her web browser finally loaded the website she needed.

”Alright, what am I looking for here…is it…yeah, the My Body tab, aaaaand Part Swaps. Let’s see if his loads any faster.”

It didn’t. Charlotte sighed and waited. Twenty seconds to load each new page was pretty bad, but at least she still had internet at all. After agonizing over the inconvenience of lost time, she was browsing through the Heads section of the available Digital Swaps. Each new picture took almost five seconds to load.

“God, this is going to take forever. That one is a no…don’t want to be a redhead…eh, too soon to be Japanese again…that one is a skin-tone clash…oh? Who are *you*, pretty little thing?”

She was staring at a round face with full lips and brown eyes so light they were almost yellow. The hair was platinum blonde with black ombré ends. The cherry on top: the skin matched her body’s skin tone almost exactly.

Charlotte clicked to offer her a swap. After a few torturous minutes of fighting her slow connection, she confirmed she was offering the head on her neck of a permanent 1-to-1 head trade. She was genuinely surprised to see an acceptance text and email alert on her phone within twenty seconds.

”At least my phone still works just fine! Alright, let’s get this set up.”

There was only a single page for her to navigate to this time. In about a minute, Charlotte was seated and waiting on her computer to start digitalization. Her computer, not requiring the internet for this function, rapidly scanned Charlotte’s head and began uploading the appendage to her system. Charlotte felt the top of her head disappearing. A second later, her vision evaporated. She licked her top lip before it too was pulled into the data file. In ten seconds, Charlotte’s head was a zip file and Charlotte was headless.

Charlotte twiddled her fingers. This was, what, the third time she had done this? It was nice that the system could still update her on progress while she was decapitated. She was ready to wait a bit for the transfers to complete. What she wasn’t ready for was how fast her head file had been both sent to and received by its new owner.

(guess my upload speed…better than download)

Charlotte simply sat as the part swap site gave her information on her transaction. She couldn’t tell you if she was seeing it or hearing it, just that she knew what was happening. Her trade partner had received her head file, the part swap site received the new head file from her trade partner, her old head file (since safely transferred) had been deleted from her computer and their website, her computer was starting to receive the file for her new head.

(Yep…download is gonna…take time)

It did. Ten minutes passed to get to 30% completion. Charlotte stood up. Without a head, there was nothing she could do to distract herself until the download completed - except move. She stretched a bit, tapped her feet, and simply moved however she felt like moving. She stayed close to the computer. 35%.

(uuhggh…I forgot…this part sucks…wait…what’s that mean)

She “saw” an error message. The file could not be sent due to network difficulties. She somehow told the system she wanted to try again. The download resumed…from 0%. She moved and waited for another twenty minutes. The progress reached 28% before the download failed again.

(what the…she has my head…let me get hers…huh…no no no)

A new error was known to her. To safely deliver the head, they would send it to an authorized shipping company in her area to download it, package it, and take it to her. She would get an email to confirm the details.

(But I can’t…how can I read the email…when will they send it…no no no let me try the download again)

Her computer could not let her do that - the website had already sent her a “Thank you for using our service!” message and automatically closed.

Charlotte’s world became much more quiet. The computer connection to her consciousness didn’t feel like much when it was in operation. Now that it (and her head) were gone, it was obvious how little Ms. Little could sense around her.

(shit shit shit…not again…headless again…what do I do now)

Charlotte staggered randomly around her computer room. She bumped the desk and sidestepped into the door frame. Her hands clawed at everything she touched and grabbed. As her beheaded stumbling expanded to the rest of her house, she knocked over and displaced countless possessions. Her plans for the rest of the night were forgotten.

(will I have to sign for it…when will it show up…do I have to confirm it…this is hard…just give me my damn head)

Her questions went unanswered. Her plea went ungranted. The “temporarily” headless woman was left to fend for herself.

At least the email she couldn’t read said it would be delivered in three days. But would she be lucky enough to find the package when it came?
