So, the strangeness under this?

It only make sense from the hero point of view- and sometimes, involuntary help him.

"I saw you, you rushed to save Betty first! "

"Er, well...Veronica.... Maybe you're not the one I like, finally?" (cue epiphany)

But from the villain POW, the gain is not as obvious- the death of two persons dear to the hero is not that sure anyway. And precise targets, well, if you're pragmatic, targeting a bus full of random children is the most often enough to make a hero react anyway.

So pick possible girlfriend 1 and then possible girlfriend 2 take much more time, for a not so different result. So, common tricks in the book for supervillain sometimes don't make from their perspective. Except, so, psychopaths who principally seek for their opponent 's pain and are delighted of it.  Otherwise... (The Superman example, by the way, turn out to a dream of the latter. And it make perfect sense as Luthor is an intelligent and pragmatic person who'll probably not use this trick literally).
I must admit, lampshade hanging is quite fun when you turn perspective tables. Darkseid is all like: "Crap, I 'll have to rewrite the entire manual."

Aaaand there is the major turn. I wanted to finish this chapter before, but now, this story that debuted like a joke is no joke any more; it became quite complex in my mind. The better thing to do is, start to order all this, and write  a bible (what will be done, can and can not happen, etc), so stay tuned.
