History:
Pre-hatching:
Solaris’s mother, Capella, was the daughter of two wealthy and powerful aristocrats. They raised her to be polite and good-natured, sweet and friendly. But she thought otherwise. As some might say, she was an aristocrat gone wrong. Capella was anything but polite or sweet, having a very abrasive, calculating, boisterous and brutal personality, preferring to lurk with the lower class in their bars and slums, fight in brawls and stalk in the shadows. She tried her best to hide her other life from her parents, sneaking out at night to do what she truly enjoyed. Eventually they found out, but she was already old enough to go and live on her own anyways. She kept her aristocratic status, but decided to join the military, where she could fight all she wanted. 6 years after joining the military, when she was 26, Capella had a one night stand with another soldier. This resulted in a single egg, which would soon become Solaris.
Hatchling:
Solaris’s egg was kept outside in the sunlight, in hopes he would become suntouched. But this wasn’t just for the typical reason, of aristocrats wanting their offspring to be suntouched because it was a status symbol. She wanted him to be powerful, so she could take advantage of this power herself. Her parents had attempted to have her be suntouched, but they hadn’t left her egg in the sun long enough. She didn’t want to make their same mistake, and miss out on the opportunity of her dragonet being suntouched. When Solaris’s egg turned entirely white, she brought it inside. Solaris hatched only a day later, and his glowing scales brought satisfaction to his mother. Considering she wasn’t exactly the motherly type, Capella did a relatively reasonable job taking care of Solaris. During the days, when she was on guard duty or dealing with other military matters, Solaris was left alone in their mansion. He never got into trouble, fearing that would displease his mother, and once he was a little older he would go around the house finding things that he could use to create a gift for his mother, to please her and make her happy. If she had lost something, he would find it. If she needed something, he would get it. She never showed much gratitude for his efforts, and once he was older, she began pushing him towards more extreme methods to gain her respect.
Dragonet:
Once Solaris was 6 years old, Capella began training him to fight. Instead of the normal aristocratic teachings of manners and etiquette, Solaris received the teachings of brutality and fighting. Capella wanted him to follow in her footsteps, and become a strong soldier. At first, her lessons weren’t bad. Simple techniques, that sort of thing. Solaris just assumed this was how everyone’s lives were, that everyone was taught how to fight. He went to school during the day, but at night, it was all training. One day, when he was 8, Capella took him out on his first mission. He was to observe his mother attacking and killing a patrol of Xocorian knights, and then do the same himself, using his suntouched abilities to his advantage. He waited and watched from the trees as his mother ambushed a group. It was a bloodbath. They were cut down one by one, only one managing to escape. But that was simply because Capella needed someone to go and get another patrol, one for Solaris to attack. Solaris was horrified, but he wanted to please his mother. They were dragon-killers, after all. It was ok to kill them, if they did the same to them without thought. Right? They were protecting other dragons by doing this. They were helping. Solaris reassured himself as he waited for the next patrol to come along. When they did, he leaped out into the open. The patrol was furious, as they of course knew of, and saw the carnage that had been caused by Capella. Capella had strategically planned for them to be furious, so it would make the fight more challenging. Solaris tried his best to use every technique he knew of, but he just couldn’t bring himself to be as brutal as his mother. Instead, he evaded their strikes, and when the moment was right, he unleashed a flash of blinding light, giving him time to kill the three knights in a more merciful way. When he was done, his mother was furious with him. His mercy was seen as weakness to her. She continued to train him, but she trained him harder and harder, forcing him to be more brutal on future missions, sometimes even threatening him. When he was 10, Capella began to train another Sundrake, a Shade named Rastaban. Her focus moved to this new student, and away from Solaris. He was both relieved, and upset at the same time. He wouldn’t have to fight anymore. But he had failed to gain his mother’s respect.
Young adult:
As Rastaban became Capella’s favorite, and Solaris became more of an outcast, a disgrace, he slipped into a state of rage and hatred. After all his efforts, all his attempts to be this perfect son, to be loved, he just couldn’t do it. One day, when Solaris was 15, after Rastaban had left for the night, he confronted his mother. ‘’Why can’t I be good enough for you? My entire life, everything I’ve ever done has been to please you. I’ve tried my hardest, fought my hardest for you. But you never show any appreciation. What do you want me to do? Destroy an army? Topple a nation? ANSWER ME!!’’ Solaris snarled. Capella turned to look at him, a calm expression on her face. ‘’Well, you said it yourself. You’re just not good enough. Rastaban however has the brutality and strength of a true fighter. I could never quite get that in you. You’re just too scared.’’ Capella replied. Solaris launched at her, and Capella didn’t resist, letting him pin her down. Sunfire rose in his throat, the glow of his scales intensifying. ‘’Go ahead. Do it. Burn me, take out all your anger.’’ Capella said tauntingly, a smirk on her face. Realizing what he was about to do, Solaris stumbled backwards, releasing his grip. ‘’I knew you’d never have the guts. You never did, and you never will.’’ She said. Solaris walked to the door, but turned back to her as realization finally came over him. ‘’I’m stronger than you’ll ever be. You say you’re strong, but really, you’re weak. You have no restraint. You can’t control your actions. I could have killed you, but I didn’t. You never think twice. You never realize what you’re actually doing. That is true weakness.’’ And with that statement, he turned and left. That was the last time that he ever saw his mother again. That night, she left to go hunting, and never returned. The next morning, Solaris searched for her, but she was nowhere to be seen. He thought maybe she was just out with Rastaban, or doing other military things. But when he returned from school, and she still wasn’t there, he began to wonder. He waited a day. Two days. Three days. She never showed up. He had been mad at her, but he certainly hadn’t wished her dead. He realized that all of her fights with the dragon hunters must have caught up with her. But he felt little remorse over her death. He had realized that she truly was a monster, and that the world, and himself, were probably better off without her. But his problem now, was where to go. He had never met his grandparents, but his mother had told him about them. He knew they lived somewhere in the city. He just had to find them. And with that, he packed up his meager belongings and left his home for good, in search of a new one. He was able to ask another aristocratic family that lived nearby for information on where his grandparents lived, since he knew their names. When he arrived at their house, Corvus and Pegasus were certainly surprised. They hadn’t even known that Capella had had a child, or what had become of her. They became his parents, and taught him the true aristocratic ways. He felt truly at home with them. They didn’t make him fight, or threaten him. They treated him as their son. Eventually, when he was 20, he was able to gain a place in the king’s court. Soon after, he moved to his own home, not too far from where his grandparents lived. He now lives there peacefully with his barn griffon, Honor, whom he adopted from a local breeder of the species 2 years ago, when he was 30. He believes that fighting should only be used when necessary, and it should not be done in any sort of brutal way, if it is used.
RELATIONSHIPSCapella: I wanted her approval for so long, but now I realize how truly terrible she was.
Corvus: It was so kind of him and Pegasus to take me in. Even though they are my grandparents, it was nice that they were able to look past their aggression towards Capella, and not take it out on me.
Pegasus: She became my mother once Capella died. I don’t know what would have happened to me if she hadn’t taken me in.
Rastaban: My mother trained him for a bit, but I don’t really know him well. Yet...
EXTRARumours/Reputation: There aren’t very many rumors about him, since he’s a minor court member he’s not incredibly well-known.
Voice claim: Zuko from ATLA
Moodboard: N/A
Theme song: N/A
Family: Solaris’s known family, on his mother’s side, are aristocrats. His mother was killed by Madro , a Xocorian knight, who now wears her skin as a cape. After her death, he went to live with his grandparents, Pegasus and Corvus. He doesn’t know who his father is, but maybe he’ll find him someday...
Extra notes: Solaris is loosely based off of Zuko from Avatar The Last Airbender, and has a pet barn griffon named Honor. Her ref can be found here .
