The title is less odd when one considers that the job of a soul reaper is to cleanse hollows, so that the soul can pass onto the next world with a clean slate. They BLEACH the evil/sin out.

Though it still tends to sound outright bizarre to new comers.

I had the exact same theory as to the title being 'Bleach.' I thought it was a little weird too at first but it makes a lot more sense when one realizes:
a)Bleach is not just a cleaning agent (noun) but also a verb.
b)It's applicable in the spiritual sense.
As far as I know its never explained in the show and I've seen well over 200 episodes and 1 or 2 movies. Hell, they don't even say the title of the show in the show like most other programs thus adding to the confusion O_o.

Well, I suppose that all depends on ones definition of comedy. It tends to at least try to take itself mostly serious, and has a rather deeply immersive overarching plot, so it's more of an action oriented drama piece with warrior/way-of-the-sword philosophical undertones. It does however have quite a few comedic elements that it intersperse between it all, often with little too no warning before engaging a tone shift for maximum contrast grade disorientation.

The main character also has one of the most distinctive theme songs I've ever heard, which tends to blare whenever his action sequence get exceptionally intense/heroic. ( [link] )

When I think of comedy, I think of intentionally funny, that doesn't sound intentionally funny, because you said it sounded similar to DBZ.

Well if the Grim Reaper where an average Japanese anime high-school student who fights demons using DBZ like powers and a sword as long as his own body, then yes.

Though I can kind of admit that description still might sound kind of dumb. Basically anyone that liked Yu-Yu-Hakusho would probably also like Bleach.

Man, it's been too long since I've actually read that series and not just stuff about it. I got behind and confused and haven't been able to reread it. I forget about stuff like that. Though I do remember reading an interview or something somewhere with an explanation on the title.

Just because you can make sense of something, doesn't necessarily lessen the oddness factor though. XD
