Heh, yea... hands are one of the more difficult things to draw, all I can say for that is use your own hand as a reference for your drawing (that's what I have to do), and try to think about how the bone structure of it works (what connects where, what bends where, etc).

And as far as the shading goes. The main thing would be to just study actual objects and how light and shadows fall on it, and be sure you determine where your light source is comming from in your drawing... that will help you figure out where to put highlights and where to put shadows. And just be sure to use a wide range of value between your lights and darks on the shadows and highlights so you can tell what is what. And as far as using coloured pencils goes, for the shadows, maybe try using a different coloured pencil that will give you a darker shade if you have one. And I'm not sure which kind of pencils you are using to colour, but if you'd like to try your hand at some really nice ones (if you haven't already), prismacolors colour very nicely... a little more expensive than your normal pencil, but the lead is very soft so it's easy to get a nice saturated colour out of it.
