okay spoiler time
1. Yes he used to be at the Wammy's house he was one of the first generations of L's successors, he was second in line (mello and near are like 4th gerneration) but A killed himself do to being under pressure.
2. He was obsessed with being better than L and would do anything to prove he was better and so he decided to dress like him, act like him, and think even more like him with his own demented twist.

Sorry if I sound like an idiot, but I've only seen all of the anime, read parts of the 13 manga book, and read Vol. 2. I'm a tad lost

well I wasn't too sure on that part either but I think there have been like groups of candicates to be L like for example....
group 1: A, B, C, D, E
group 2: F, G, H, I
group 3: J,K,(L?)
group 4: M, N, O, P...etc
but I think there was only one successor chosen for each group or generation (because was only 25 when he died and mello and near are like 15 at the end)
I have no clue about Matt, either I skipped a few episodes on him or there wasn't much on him at all in the anime

You're right Matt barely shows up in the anime, but he's in the manga plenty of times. My friend said that Matt was third to be L's successor, behind Mello and Near. I wonder why they don't mention anymore people like them ( you know, from the Whammy's house)
Oh, I'll tell you a secret that I heard once that may be about L and BB. My friend said that at one piont, they pulled up a file on L and found out he was married or something. But, he tried to deny it? Saying something about the person being a convict. I'm not sure, but that seems a little suspicious. At first I thought she was talking about a fanfic, but she said it was real.

I read the manga up until L died so I never really got to know who Matt was.
The only time I saw him in the anime was when he died :/ 'I think I missed an episode or something.
