But in that TV series, Sonic is a teenager (it says so by the end of the first couple episodes where Robotnik starts his sentence with "One trouble-making teenager..."), so it'd make sense for Tails to be, what, eight?

But the games' chronology is different. Sonic is apparently in his late teens/early 20's and Tails recently went through puberty.

And AoSTH is probably based on the Genesis games, so it'd make sense that Tails would be at an age where the average person has average vocabulary skills. Maybe 8? 9?
