It's more like she reacts to the neglectful way in which he treats her. According to the writers, she was growing into a woman while he was remaining a boy.

Yeah... I am not very familiar with the new series, but I know that the film/cartoon makers can sometimes ruin a completely good couple by making a new series or sequel of it...
