TAIGA

aaaand my favorite, and arguably the main protagonist of this thing, taiga! technically royalty but cousin to the (current) queen, and she never even had a shot. taiga has a disorder where her inner temperature is off, meaning she's NOT immune to freezing temperatures, and doesn't have ice breath. she's cool to the touch, but not cold. obviously this caused her a lot of problems in the icewing kingdom. after her mom was killed in the skywing war, her father was left to raise her. he tried to get her to be close with her cousin frostbite, hoping taiga could become a respectable royal guard. and while she was successful in battle and in royal mannerisms and social graces, her physical issues always made her struggle in the rankings. SOMEHOW she managed to make it decently high enough to be, yes, a guard! she was... okay with this, in that she was bitter about everything, but still.

when the new queen took over, she sent frostbite to deliver an animus-touched object to the skywing kingdom, with taiga and begonia as guards. they were attacked by mercenaries and lost the object, which lead to them realizing they Could Not Go Back. so they instead got wrapped up in trying to find the animus object, which became looking after dreamfinder, which became trying to stop the war...

taiga is bitter and jaded but she has a good heart and her own fire. she can be rude and seemingly uncaring, but she's just been trained to suppress stuff. she got in trouble for speaking back to queens, though. idk how to actually describe her, sometimes you just Feel a character, you know.

after a few fights with veil they start to have a bit of a romance. the true otp.

PRINCESS FROSTBITE
never considered very pretty, frostbite was the youngest daughter of the icewing queen. she's stuck up and shallow and generally mean-girls esque, though she's not cruel in the way a lot of icewings are. she and taiga have always been close friends, both because they were stuck together, but also because taiga didn't think she was stupid and irrelevant, and frostbite liked taiga and respect her without regard to her physical issues. but then frostbite's eldest sister took over. their middle sister mysteriously was killed by an "assassin", and her husband began to court the queen. the queen sent frostbite n co off to the skywing kingdom... while quietly hiring some mercenaries to get rid of her last potential challenger.

during the attack, frostbite was badly injured. both by flaws and teeth, but also by rainwing venom. she only survived because taiga managed to get her some help, but they left a lot of scars. she... struggled a lot with realizing her sister tried to kill her, that she could never go home, and her new appearance. she stayed with taiga, humbled a bit and trying to make a new life. she is actually really good at organizing and making jewelry even if she's kind of a jerk, so she'll get a happy ending someday. she likes showing dreamfinder how to do stuff and doing lowkey things like weaving baskets with her. she really needs this war to not happen so she can move to one of the sanctuary towns and become the best jewelrymaker ever, duh, so good that even pantala with know her name!
