"Almost ready," Twilight Sparkle said to herself as she jotted down the final lines to her daily checklist. Even something as simple as making repairs to a collapsed curtain in the library tended to have a long list of detailed steps. As Spike consistently pointed out, such small things seldom needed strict adherence to protocol. But old habits die hard, and Twilight couldn't help making sure plans are laid out, just to keep things tidy.

Twilight and Spike stepped outside and began making their way to a shop in Ponyville. Hopefully, there'd be a good deal on a new curtain rod, and maybe even a nicer pattern to add some more color to the library.

However, halfway to their destination, the two saw a pair of Pegasus mares they knew all too well.

Spike was first to spot them, and pointed them out. It was Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy, sitting on a park bench near a garden. They seemed to be enjoying themselves...

But... Twilight noticed a few subtle changes in their behavior. They were REALLY enjoying each other's company: more so than usual, it seemed. Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash were facing each other and talking. Their faces were barely inches apart, they had big smiles on their faces, and... they were holding hooves the whole time. They seemed simply infatuated with each other. Twilight and Spike were puzzled; the two flying ponies were always close, but... something seemed different about them.

"Rainbow Dash? Fluttershy?" Twilight called as subtly as possible.

"Oh! Heya, Twi!" Rainbow Dash greeted.

"Hello, Twilight! Hello, Spike!" Fluttershy quickly followed.

Twilight smiled, hiding her overwhelming curiosity. "Hey, you two! You look like you're enjoying yourselves. Did you see Roseluck's new rose patch?"

"Oh, we did," giggled Fluttershy. "That garden just gets more beautiful the more time passes. Not only do the townsponies constantly add new species to it, but Rainbow Dash's natural showers have helped them stay healthy."

"Yeah! See, you don't need a HUGE rain cloud to keep the green around here," Rainbow confidently said. "You just gotta make sure every plant gets just enough water."

"Hmmm... And just how much is 'just enough water,' Rainbow Dash?" said Spike, somewhat incredulous that the tomboyish speed demon was well versed in botany.

"Ha! Nice try, Spike, but I know my stuff! I helped keep Ponyville's flowers healthy for 5 years. I mean, that's kinda one of my goals as chief weatherpony. Duh!" Rainbow laughed. She had a point.

"That's good to know," Twilight said, "but... that's not why the sight of you two is so intriguing. You two really look happy. As in, there is more to it than just the beauty of our gardens. I saw you two talking. You were so wrapped up in your conversation, there seemed to be all there was going on in the world. And, uh, you two haven't stopped holding hooves, even after we started talking to you. I just have to know... WHAT is going on with you two?"

Rainbow and Fluttershy knew Twilight wasn't asking for ill-mannered reasons. They glanced each other. Then, they smiled.

"Sorry, Twilight," Fluttershy meekly said. "We didn't mean to be so obvious. But since you seem so interested, I suppose we could tell you..."

Rainbow Dash continued, "Funny thing, actually... A few days ago, Fluttershy here came up and said that she was dwelling on how I took care of her over the years. I mean, we've been best friends from fillyhood, we like each other a lot, and..." Rainbow sighed between sentences. "And... I've been feeling bad since that test I had near Cloudsdale, how I could've lost somepony I really care about."

The torch was again passed to Fluttershy. "Twilight... I explained to Rainbow Dash that, ever since she rescued me, most of my thoughts kept drifting solely to... um... her. So I said that... I... wanted to be more than just friends."

Twilight seemed like she was zoning out somewhat. Even with all her booksmarts, life still came as a surprise to her on a daily basis. "So... Are you two saying...?"

Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash nuzzled heads. "It's true, Twi. Fluttershy and I are 'together' now!" Rainbow proudly proclaimed.

While Spike stood in stunned silence, Twilight's reaction was much less subdued. "Oh... my... gosh..." she mumbled. Suddenly, a wide grin appeared on her face, and she couldn't contain herself. "Oh my gosh! Oh my gosh! Ohmygosh ohmygosh ohmygosh ohmygosh!" She was overjoyed, hopping up and down in circles around the two mares. "I can't believe it! Two of my best friends are in love!!!"

"No way!" Spike exclaimed. "YOU two? No lie?"

The two flyers blushed. Fluttershy humbly nodded in confirmation. "Mm-hmm. So... um... What do you think?"

"What do I think?" Twilight asked. "What CAN I think?! I'm so, so happy for you two!"

Rainbow and Fluttershy had only become a couple a short time ago. However, the enthusiastic response from Twilight was encouraging. They were happy that the first pony to know about their new relationship was so accepting.

Spike smiled to show his support. Deep down, though, he had mixed feelings towards it all. "Huh," he thought. "All those stories Twilight told me when I hatched all involved a boy and a girl falling in love. But here we are, standing in front of two mares that fell in love... with each other! So just how common ARE boy-boy or girl-girl crushes? I'll need to ask Twi later..." It was all so new to him.

For the moment, the news of Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy's blossoming love was met with excitement and acceptance. But Spike's mind was thrown for a loop. After seeing exclusively heterosexual relationships the whole time he spent growing up in Canterlot, he had been exposed to something that was barely spoken of in his youth. It was almost like being told it was okay for him to play with girl toys. It was just... weird. Interesting, but weird.

Would Twilight be able to explain this phenomenon to him?
