MARCH 2024 UPDATE: Holy crap, this image went viral. It also went for many years with a broken link to the scene that inspired this, so I just dug it back up, and I'm posting it here.This is from a fanfiction chapter that I never published, tied with "Goku's Humored" my fanfiction on FFnet, which I have been rewriting as Legend & Legacy."

In this scene, Gohan has absolutely no idea of what's happened. He's thinking of something completely different than Trunks is LOL
For those who read my fanfiction, this is the scene that goes with the illustration:
Setting:
Trunks and Gohan enter a restaurant. Gohan is the one who has invited Trunks to the
nice restaurant. Trunks is obviously a little nervous and slightly confused as to why
Gohan invited him, to speak with him personally, without Videl or Pan around. Trunks
has the feeling that something is wrong, or Gohan may be upset with him for some
reason, and is quite visibly on his toes.
Throughout this scene, Trunks is supposed to be painfully anxious, scared shitless as to
what Gohan invited him to dinner for. We find out that Trunks is being torn up
emotionally inside, being confused, scared, worried, uncomfortable. We later find out
that Gohan is in a very similar state, no matter how well he can hide it in the beginning.
::Gohan and Trunks sit down and are handed menus::
::Gohan thanks the waiter and opens up his menu, looking at the items::
Gh: Ahh, this is nice. ::scans the menu:: I haven’t been to this place in many years, since
my tenth anniversary with Videl.
T: :
retends to look at the menu, but he keeps making glances upward toward Gohan::Yes, this is a nice place…
Gh: It’s been a while since I’ve gone out in general. I’m glad I could take you here. It’s
been a long time since we spent any time alone.
T: Heh, yeah, I know…
Gh: Remember when we used to play with your toys together? Man, that was so long
ago. I remember when you were just a baby, before Goten was even born, I would
babysit you all the time. ::laughs:: You were probably the most problematic child I’ve
ever known.
T: Huh? Really?
Gh: I swear, you tended to run off and vanish places. I seriously thought I lost you for
hours on end, and you’d have curled up in the back of a closet somewhere.
T: ::blushes slightly and looks down, slightly smiling:: I’m sure, when you became a
father yourself, you found Pan has had her own ways of vanishing as a child, as well?
Gh: Yes, she has also been one to take up and dissapear. ::leans back in chair:: Like that
year she went off to space with you and didn’t tell anyone about it. ::laughs:: We didn’t
even know she was gone until we came home and found a letter on the kitchen table. We
thought you guys accidentally took off without Goten, but I would have never imagined
Pan hid on that ship.
::waiter arrives with bread::
Gh: Thank you ::nods to waiter::
::waiter leaves::
Gh: ::grabs a roll and puts it on his plate:: I hear you guys had quite a trip. Even
managed to lure Baby to Earth. You guys really had some crazy experiences, huh?
::smiles and looks up:: I remember going to Namek with your mother and Krillin. It was
also a memorable trip. :
uts butter on the bread:: I wish I could have gone to space aswell. Perhaps some day that opportunity may come again, who knows.
T: ::still looking at the menu:: Well, we do have a space ship. If you ever want to take a
vacation, I’m sure I could give you a tour of the galaxy…
Gh: ::takes a bite of the bread:: ::notices Trunks hasn’t touched the food, still looking
down at the menu:: ::grins a bit as he sees that Trunks is nervous about something::
Gh: How did you guys run into Baby anyways? Of all the people in the universe you
could have bumped into, how is it you happened to find the only creature that could give
my father a run for his money?
T: ::smirks:: :
uts the menu down and reaches for a bread roll:: That was all Pan’sdoing. She wanted to visit Giru’s home planet, so we did. That ended up setting us back
a bit, especially when we accidentally brought Baby on board with us to the planet Vidal
and he, well… ::takes a bite of the bread:: … happened to catch me by surprise, I guess
you could say.
Gh: I take it Pan got you guys in trouble a lot? She tends to rush into things, I know.
T: ::chokes a bit on food:: ::sweats:: ::lies:: Uh, no, she was perfectly well-behaved the
entire trip…
Gh: ::laughs:: Trunks you are a horrible liar. ::grins:: I know Pan is very much like her
mother, rushing into things without thinking beforehand. I’m… ::nods toward Trunks::
I’m glad that she came home safely. I hear from my dad that a lot of it has to do with
you.
T: Well, uh, ::looks down at his ring, wondering what else Goku might have said to
Gohan:: I did my best to protect her.
Gh: To protect her? ::laughs:: I hear that it has to do with a little more than that…
::waiter shows up:: ::Trunks is absolutely dying from anxiety::
Waiter: May I start you out with any drinks tonight?
Gh: Yes, please. I’d like your house wine to start. Two bottles should be fine. ::smiles
at Trunks:: Is there anything else you’d like, Trunks?
T: ::stunned at how Gohan is ordering wine for them:: Uh, just water should be fine…
Waiter: Two bottles of the house wine, and two glasses of water. I’ll be right back to
take your orders. ::leaves::
Gh: Trunks, I’m sure you’re wondering why I’ve brought you here tonight. ::silence
follows for a bit:: It’s because there is something I’d like to discuss with you.
T: ::completely a wreck, but doing his best to hide it:: Yes, Gohan? ::swallows::
Gh: It’s about you and Pan…
T: ::tearing himself apart, his legs somewhat shaking, his hands cold:: ::forces a smile::
Yeah?
Gh: I hear you two have become very…close.
T: ::feels dizzy:: Ahh…?
Gh: Pan has even taken to calling you her best friend and tends to babble on for hours
about how much she adores you.
T: … Really?
Gh: I wanted to know for myself. Is it true? Have you and she really become best
friends since the Grand Tour?
T: Well… uh… ::breathes:: Yes, it is true. She has become a best friend of mine. But I
wouldn’t say she’s my only best friend. I mean, there’s also Goten…
Gh: I know about Goten, Trunks. I didn’t know about Pan. ::smiles:: :
auses:: Whydon’t you take her out sometime? I don’t have any problem with you two going places
together. In fact, I feel it might be a good experience for Pan for her to go out and do
things alone with you.
T: You do?
Gh: ::hesitant pause:: I want to tell you something, Trunks, and this stays between us,
okay?
T: ::nods::
Gh: ::leans in closer:: Pan hasn’t exactly had the best experiences with boys her age.
::sighs:: Before she went to space with you and my dad, she would come crying every
night about how she never fit in and nobody could understand her. :
auses:: It tore meup to see her cry like that. I didn’t know what I could do. No matter much I would hug
her and tell her that everything was okay, the next day she’d go back to school and return
with tears in her eyes. :
auses again:: It hurt me so much to see my daughter like that. Idon’t think anything could hurt me more than Pan’s tears.
T: ::looks down:: Yeah, I know what you mean…
Gh: Trunks…
T: ::still listening::
Gh: You… you are the best thing that has ever happened to her.
T: ::looks up:: I… I am?
::waiter returns with two wine bottles::
::waiter pours Gohan a glass, then Trunks a glass::
Gh: Thank you.
T: Yes, thank you very much.
Waiter: Are you ready to place your orders?
Gh: Yes, I am. Are you ready, Trunks?
T: Uh… ::scans the menu for the first time:: Why don’t you order first?
Gh: I’ll have your fish special of the day. Three of them, please.
Waiter: Will two of those be carry-outs?
Gh: ::laughs:: No. Better serve them all at once. I’m feeling pretty hungry tonight.
T: I’ll have the same, actually. But, only two plates. I’m not really that hungry.
Waiter: Uh, okay. I’ll be back with your food in a bit. ::takes the menus and walks away
with a confused expression::
T: So, what were you saying about me being the best thing to ever happen to Pan? ::raise
eyebrow::
Gh: You should see her, Trunks. She used to come home crying every day. Now… Now
she comes home beaming in smiles, laughing and hugging us, telling us how much she
loves us and she’s so happy with her life. :
auses and shakes his head in disbelief:: It’s..incredible. I’ve never seen her so happy.
T: ::takes a sip of wine:: You know, it might also be from the fact that you and Videl had
been possessed by Baby for a long time, she’s finally appreciating her family. I don’t
know if it’s all to do with me…
Gh: I know that. I know that what happened to us all played a huge part in how she
appreciates us now, but… Trunks…You’re all that she talks about. ::smiles:: You should
see her costume for your mother’s annual reunion party. She and Goten have been
planning this for weeks, she wants so much for you to like her costume.
T: Oh? ::suddenly gets a sparked interested:: What is it? Or is that a secret?
Gh: ::laughs:: I think I’ll leave it as a surprise for you. ::sips wine, grinning:: Although I
personally don’t get the joke, since I wasn’t there at the time this costume inspiration was
present in your life – well, I was, for part of it, but I didn’t notice it like everyone else did
later on – Goten has been rolling on the floor over this costume, and I know you’ll get a
kick out of it either way.
::long pause as both sip their wine::
T: ::uncomfortable with the silence:: So, uh… is that what you invited me to dinner for?
I mean… to tell me Pan has been happier lately?
Gh: ::smiles:: Well… part of it. I’m not sure how to really word this, though.
T: Well, uh… straight to the point is usually a good way to go if you can’t think of any
other way to say it…
Gh: ::laughs hard:: Straight and to the point might sound a little awkward for you.
T: ::frowns a bit, once again feeling the tingles of anxiety in his stomach::
Gh: :
ause:: How about this. I would like to… talk about…. you, for a minute.T: Okay…
Gh: I have always admired you, Trunks. You have always held a fire in your personality
that could never be kindled. You are ambitious, successful, an incredible fighter, and a
wonderful friend. You’ve even –”
T: ::interrupts uncomfortably:: “–Gohan, I’m not really sure where you’re going with
this, but you’re making me feel a little awkward…”
Gh: Why is that?
T: You’re telling me all these compliments out of the blue, and I really have no idea what
this is about. I’d rather you give me a general topic which you’re trying to elaborate
on…
Gh: Well… uh… ::breath:: Trunks, I have always viewed you as a member of my
family. Almost, like a little brother, because of Goten and how you two were inseparable
for a great number of years…
T: ::frowns:: ::slightly dizzy, but persistent:: To the point, Gohan.
Gh: ::takes a sip of wine nervously:: ::awkward silence::
::waiter arrives with the trays of food::
Waiter: Here you are, sir, three plates of our Swordfish special. ::lays them out before
Gohan:: And for you, sir, two more plates ::lays two before Trunks:: Is there anything
else I can get for you two?
T: ::shifts nervously and clears his throat::
Gh: No… no, thank you very much.
::waiter leaves::
::silence over the table::
T: ::takes the napkin and puts it on his lap::
Gh: ::takes a fork and knife and cuts the fish:: ::takes a bite:: ::says nervously:: Mmm,
this is great! I love their fish here.
T: ::coughs:: Yeah. ::begins to cut his own slice::
Gh: You know, they also have a really great prime rib. They do something to it… add
some spice – I don’t know what it is – that gives it a zesty aftertaste. It’s really
interesting…
T: I think I’ve tried it before…
Gh: I should find out what that spice is. I could use it for barbeques and such.
T: That sound great. :
ause:: I’m sure you could find out what it is if you ask the waiter.Gh: Yeah…
::Trunks and Gohan continue to eat in awkward silence::
Gh: ::coughs:: So Trunks…
T: Hmm? ::takes another bite::
Gh: Do you… :
ause:: have any… romantic interest?T: ::nearly chokes as he swallows:: Romantic interest?
Gh: I mean ::scratches behind his head with a somewhat embarrassed grin:: Like, a
girlfriend or anything?
T: ::blushes slightly:: Uh… no, why?
Gh: I was thinking…
T: ::eyes widen as he suddenly gets what Gohan is about to say::
Gh: I mean… you’re best friends with Pan, right?
T: ::mouth drops open in absolute stupor::
Gh: Why don’t you guys… you know… :
ause:: Why can’t you give it, you know… ashot…?
T: ::dangerously slow, says:: Give…what… a shot???
Gh: You know… ::really long pause:: … dating her?
::It is as if a huge blow hits Trunks and he’s rendered speechless::
T: Ahh… Ahhhh Ahh! ::brings his hand to his forehead and runs it through his hair
awkwardly:: Well.. Gohan, you see, uh ::blushes furiously::, I mean, you, I mean…
Pan… She and I, we’re, I mean… you know, I … Ahh… Ahhhh, uhh… ::stumbles over
words, possibly the most nervous he’s ever been in his life:: I, you see, we, Pan and I, I
mean, we… Aren’t you… ahhh…. Don’t you think she’s… I mean…
Gh: ::laughs nervously:: Yes, I know what you mean. I’m sorry if I’ve embarrassed you.
T: I… Ahh… ::shaking a bit, eyes still wide:: ::looks down at the table::
Gh: Listen, I didn’t mean for you to feel like you had to respond to that. ::inhales and
exhales:: I just wanted to bring that out in the open. That… ::he smiles slightly:: I really
don’t mind if you and my daughter get together. I think… I think it would be possibly
the most wonderful thing to happen in Pan’s life, to learn from you, and grow with you.
::cuts another slice of fish:: I’m not saying marry her or anything, even though it would
be nice perhaps to have you as a son one day… ::coughs:: No… for now… I’m just
suggesting… maybe you could, you know, date her?
T: ::gulps:: Gohan… I’ve…. ::breathes:: I’ve never thought of her that way…
Gh: All I know is that Pan is crazy about you. She really looks up to you so much. I’ve
never seen her this happy before, and I feel… I feel as if … I mean… ::stops and looks at
Trunks:: I really think you should at least give it a shot. I know you’re most likely self-
conscious about your age difference, but Trunks, you two really are so good together. I
just… All I’m asking of you is for you to open your eyes and mind, and just…just think
about it, okay?
T: ::blushes and nods slowly:: Okay…
Gh: I really feel like you could have something…
T: ::still blushing:: ::thinks he sounds exactly like Goku:: ::also thinks that he KNEW that
Gohan would feel the same way about Goku. The Sons are so easy to predict::
Gh: But anyway, as I said before, just do what you feel is best. I’m not pressing you.
Just think about it and know… Pan really likes you, Trunks. You’re really one of the
best things that has happened to her.
T: ::smiles:: I’m… I’m really glad you say that, Gohan. She means a lot to me, too…
::waiter shows up::
Waiter: Would you two like any dessert this evening to finish off your meal?
Gh: Uh… I don’t know. Not for me. How about you, Trunks?
T: ::shakes his head:: I’m fine, thanks.
Waiter: Alright then, would you like your check, sir?::
Gh: Yes, I’ll be taking the bill, thank you. ::takes out wallet::
T: Are you sure, Gohan? I can most definitely treat you to this meal.
Gh: ::laughs:: No, Trunks. I invited you here; you are my guest. ::hands the waiter his
credit card::
::the waiter leaves::
T: :
auses:: So, um, as I was saying before… Pan really means a lot to me. I enjoy mytime with her, and I’m glad you support our friendship. I’m … I’m actually really
flattered. I didn’t know that I affected Pan so much. I’ll be sure to invite her more places
with me, now that I know it means so much to her. I’m glad I can make her happy.
Gh: ::smiles::
T: However, I’m not sure if I can say I’m ready to actually date her. I’m sure one day, if
things continue like they are going now, there might be a shot for that, but I feel she still
has a lot to learn before I can really open my heart to her… ::raises his hands:: Don’t get
me wrong, Gohan. I just mean… I think it would be best to wait before I act on our…
relationship…
Gh: ::laughs:: Trunks, I want to be honest with you about something. I… I really hope
that one day that you :
auses:: could, you know… maybe… fall in love with her.:
auses:: If not, I can understand. I know you are probably searching for a long-termrelationship right now, and you will be wanting a family, which Pan is not ready for yet.

T: ::blushes and smiles:: Thank you, Gohan. That means a lot to me, coming from you.

::they walk to the door of the restaurant::
Gh: ::turns to Trunks:: It was really good talking to you again. I’m glad I was able to
come here with you. I’d like to meet with you again sometime, if you ever get the
chance.
T: ::smiles:: That would be nice.
Gh: Goodnight Trunks. Tell your mom, and the rest of your family of course, I said hi.
T: Goodnight, ::nods:: you too.

Yeah, I see your point. 14 years doesn't just account for age, but also emotional maturity. However, in lauraneato's defense; 14 years doesn't really matter once you go through most of the major milestone's of life.
However, I think you're making a moot point because if you read the description, there seems to be some miscommunication going on:

Gohan's probably just talking about how Trunks and Pan have spent a lot of time together and therefore have become closer friends. On the flip side, Trunks probably thinks Gohan is insinuating that they were dating or something. Get it?
