Description
"O Tannenbaum", known in English as "O Christmas Tree", is a German Christmas song. Based on a traditional folk song which was unrelated to Christmas, it became associated with the traditional Christmas tree. The modern lyrics were written in 1824 by Ernst Anschütz. The lyrics praise the evergreen for being a symbol of constancy, joy and optimism.
In 1824, dinosaurs were first described in scientific circles, leading to the study of paleontology. In the 1820s and '30s Mary Anning excavated an amazing array of ichthyosaurs and plesiosaurs from the Jurassic cliffs of Lyme Regis, England. Unfortunately, because she was a woman, she was denied entry into the Geological Society of London even though she found the first intact plesiosaurus. And, yes, she did have a little dog sidekick. A little illustrated bio on Mary Anning: Mary Anning: The Princess of Paleontology (rejectedprincesses.com)
The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) is a charity operating in England and Wales which promotes animal welfare. The RSPCA is funded primarily by voluntary donations. Founded in 1824 as SPCA, it is the oldest and largest animal welfare organization in the world and is one of the largest charities in the UK. They proposed new laws supporting animal welfare. This led to the abolishment of bull and bear baiting. The society would become the RSPCA in 1840 when Queen Victoria became one of their patrons. This is no one in particular. Just an upper crust lady with a fondness for animals, even snakes.
Caroline Unger was an Austro-Hungarian singer who in 1824 sang contralto in the first performance of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony at Theater am Kärntnertor. Beethoven was nearly completely deaf at this point. When the symphony was over and the audience applauded, Unger was the one who turned Beethoven around so he could see the cheering crowd and take his bow.
Louise Lehzen became governess to the future Queen Victoria in 1824 when the then princess was five years old. Lehzen was fiercely protective of Victoria, and encouraged the princess to be strong, informed, and independent. “Dear, Good Lehzen” was like a mother to young Victoria and stayed on as her most trusted attendant when Victoria became queen. It is believed that when Victoria was 8 years old, Lehzen was the one who explained to Princess Victoria that she would be queen one day. Victoria replied simply “I will be good.” Her job was was to see to it that the young princess was keeping up with her studies and eating well with proper manners, but she would play dolls with her sometimes.
The first Constitution of Mexico was enacted October 4, 1824. It was drafted by a congressional assembly after the fall of Agustin Iturbide, the former emperor of Mexico. And inaugurated Mexico as a republic. The first president of Mexico was Guadelupe Victoria. Despite being orphaned young, being epileptic and having to live in the jungle due to leading a failed rebellion, Victoria was dedicated to Mexico’s independence and is considered a national hero in Mexico.
The Children’s Friend was a British journal that started in 1824. It was a series of stories published in a monthly periodical reminding children to be good Christians. One story, “Death of a Hindoo Girl” (Their spelling) was three paragraphs of how wonderful it was that “heathens” in India could be converted to Christianity so that they can die happy. (Gag!) Computer magic to make sleeping/dead face the right color.
Elizabeth Fry was a social reformer. In 1824, during a visit to Brighton, she instituted the Brighton District Visiting Society. The society arranged for volunteers to visit the homes of the poor and provide help and comfort to them. The plan was successful and was duplicated in other districts and towns across Britain. She was also famous for visiting women in prison and teaching them how to sew and read so they wouldn’t have to go back to a life of crime. Today, she is the only woman not born to a royal family to have appeared on British money.
Next week, the death of a queen, the establishment of a nation, the woman who would be the next year’s First Lady and more.
